To obtain an overview of the present status of the perinatal emergency care system and NICUs in Kyoto Prefecture, a questionnaire was administered to the obstetricians in 30 emergency hospitals that belong to the Kyoto Prefectural Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology and neonatologists in 19 institutions with a NICU among these 30 institutions.
Eighteen percent of these institutions resorted to telephone contacts for the control of the vacant NICU beds and information, and only four institutions used the emergency care information system.
Nineteen institutions had an NICU, and the total NICU bed capacities was 144. According to the NICU criteria, one institution was rated as group A, and five institutions as group B. Thirteen institutions could not be rated either as group A or B. The scored for the quality of neonatal medical care were 0-7 in six institutions, 10-14 in 11 institutions and 15-20 in one institution.
When classified by the medical district, the number of NICU beds and the level of its adequancy (1993) exceeded the level proposed by Tada in all districts except for the Soraku district and were above the level advised by the American Academy of Pediatrics in all districts except for the Chubu and Soraku districts, confirming that the NICU bed capacities in Kyoto Prefecture meet the criteria.
The results of the present questionnaire suggest the necessity of further improvement in the perinatal emergency care system and of a continued effort for providing higher quality of care to reduce the wide regional disparity. [Adv Obster Gynecol 47(4) : 523-531, 1995 (H7.7)]
