Epidemiological and bacteriological studies were carried out with 91 cases of pyodermia zamong the newborns delivered in the maternity ward of Kanto Teishin Hospital during the period from March to May 1959.
The results were as follows:
1. The chief causative agent was identified as staphylococcus aureus with phage pattern 52/52A/80 and resistance against PC, SM and TC.
2. Concerning the spreading route, the agent was suspected to have been brought into the newborns' room of the maternity ward (3rd floor) from the surgical ward (2nd floor) of the same infirmary.
3. The ocular application of Tetracyclin to all newborns before the epidemic and the elevation of room temperature and humidity on account of some troubles of the airconditioner probably promoted the epidemic.
