The following summary was obtained by the statistical survey of cancer and precancer of the skin over a 12 year-period (1952-1963) at the skin clinic of Kobe Medical College.
1) Skin cancer was found in 50 cases (comprising 19 basal cell carcinomas, 27 squamous cell carcinomas and 4 metastatic carcinomas), 0. 089% in the total numbers of dermatoses during the period of survey. Since 1958, its number has increased, with its frequency being 0, 13% during the recent 6 year-period. 16 cases of penis carcinomas and 52 cases of so-called precancers including 4 cases of Paget's disease and 5 cases of Bowen's disease were also seen.
2) Sexual predominance was noted in male, its ratio being 2: 1 in all the subjects of skin cancer. Almost equal numbers were found in basal cell carcinomas. In squamous cell carcinomas male figures were 3 times more than those of female. Age factor: 50 to 60 years of ages were found most predisposing to cancer. Among juvenile cases, the youngest incidence were those in 2 infants, male and female both 3 years of age which developed from xeroderma pigmentosum.
3) The area of predilection was facial region (found in almost half the cases), followed by the lower extremities, trunk and genital region from their order of frequency. Lesions of basal cell carcinomas were noted mainly in the face, particularly around the eye-lids, squamous cell carcinomas on the lips, head and lower extremities. In basal cell carcinomas, the size of lesions at the primary examination was found to be smaller than the little finger-head in 80% of the cases, while in squamous cell carcinomas, contrary to the basal cell carcinomas, 51% to be larger than the hen's egg.
4) Primary skin conditions providing carcinogenic changes were not clinically significant in almost all of basal cell carcinomas. Scar, radiodermatitis and xeroderma pigmentosum were often precedented skin lesions in squamous cell carcinomas. There was a rare case of carcinoma arising from discoid lupus erythematosus. As for the occupational habit, a high incidence was noted in out-door workers. Sunlight country inhabitants residing near the shore or the mountain were found more commonly affected than sunless city inhabitants.
5) On the above skin cancers therapeutic result from the combined treatment with surgical removal, various kinds of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and local injection of purified vaccinovirus (PVL) was summarized. Recent experience with Betatron irradiation therapy was also added.
6) Brief comment has been made on 4 cases of metastatic carcinomas to the skin which originated respectively in mammary gland, lung, stomach and kidney; 16 cases of penis carcinomas; 4 cases of Paget's disease, and 5 cases of Bowen's disease.
