In order to determine how much intestinal bacteria synthesize riboflavin during growth, the riboflavin contents of intra- and extrabacterial body, the ratio of both contents and the forms of riboflavin were studied. The measurement was carried out in shaking cultures of E. coli communis grown in Anderson's medium for 6,12,18,24,30,and 36 hours. The riboflavin content within the bacterial body increased to a maximum at 18 hours. Later, it decreased. The riboflavin value found in extrabacterial body per nitrogen indicated maximum figures at 18-24 hours. Then, it decreased slowly. The riboflavin contained in the medium per ml reached a maximum at this stage and scarcely increased ever since. The ratio of both contents (extrabacterial body/intrabacterial body) reached a minimum at 18 hours.
