    A non-contact volumetric measurement system for agricultural products and foods has been developed by applying the principle of Helmholtz acoustic resonance. As previously reported, a microphone was used to obtain a response signal corresponding to the swept signal input into the resonator. In post-harvesting and food-manufacturing processes, overlapping of machine noises in the response-signal causes a reduction in repeat accuracy for volume prediction.
    Electrical impedance of a loudspeaker voicecoil was used as a response signal instead of the microphone signal. This measurement system was effective in suppressing the accuracy reduction caused by surrounding noise.

  • Water Absorption Characteristics of Corn Seed During Soaking

    Corn seeds were exposed to a combined magnetic field composed of an extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic field and a static magnetic field during the seed soaking in water before germination. The effect of this exposure on the water absorption characteristics of corn seeds was examined. As a result, there was no significant difference in the water absorption rate at any water temperature between the exposed seeds and control seeds (geomagnetic field). The measured data in the control were fitted to the exact solution for the infinite plane sheet diffusion model. The values determined for the diffusion coefficients were 3.0×10-9-1.1×10-8m2⋅s-1. An Arrheniustype equation was used to relate the diffusion coefficient to temperature, and the energy of activation was estimated. The value determined was 43.4kJ⋅mol-1. Since there were no significant differences in the coefficient of water absorption rate and activitation energy between the exposed and control, exposure to magnetic field had no definite effect on the water absorption of corn seeds.

    The appropriate period of time for the harvesting in Japanese fields is shortly limited according to weather conditions. In this research, the robot tractor system which can automatically follow up to another tractor was developed for increasing work efficiency of the harvesting work. In order to find the preceding vehicle and to sense a relative position and posture under the 2-dimensional coordinate system obtained by a laser scanner, a “Template Matching” was applied. A field test using the developed automatic following control system was conducted to evaluate the performance. As the result, the robot tractor ran with the lateral error of 0.11m and the longitudinal error of less than 0.15m.

  • Dynamic Noise Level Measurement of a Combine and Prediction of a Sound Power Level

    The dynamic noise level of a combine harvester was measured using the method that has been used for construction equipment. The peripheral noise level when using a combine was grasped, and, in addition to the operator, the influence of the noise on surrounding workers was solved. Furthermore, the technique of simulating sound power level in previous research by the construction equipment was applied to the combine, the sound power level of a combine was predicted, and a measure, which reduces the dynamic noise level by interrupting or absorbing sound by a coating cover, was proposed. From now on, measures against noise of the agricultural machinery are expected to be developed by using this simulation and improving the calculation accuracy in agricultural machinery.

  • Measurement System under Controlled Environmental Conditions

    A system was designed that could continuously measure rates of CO2 evolution and O2 uptake at fixed intervals under constant or variable environmental factors (i.e., temperature and concentration of CO2 and O2). This system performs ventilation and closing of the respiratory chamber alternately. The respiration rates were calculated from the changes in the amount of each gas in the closed chamber after it was ventilated. For each measurement of the respiration rates, the gaseous composition surrounding samples was considered constant because the changes in partial pressure during the time period of closing of the chamber never exceeded 0.5kPa CO2 or O2 due to automatic ventilation. The vapor pressure effect and amount of dissolved gas in the water of humidifier (i.e. aerator) were determined, and a modified equation was formed. Hence, the repeatability of measuring system was improved.

    The novel measurement system for soil clod fineness developed by this research was installed in a tractor, with real-time measurement of soil surface irregularity conducted during rotary tillage operation. After real-time measurement, the irregularity of the tilled lane was measured by a stationary measurement system, and the calculated soil clod fineness was compared with that from real-time measurement. To clarify the influence of vibration on the system installation mechanism and on laser displacement sensor output, the vibration acceleration during tillage was also measured. The results verified the effect of vibration absorption on the system installation mechanism, and both the soil clod fineness obtained from the system loading type and the fixed-type system showed almost the same value.

    Harvesting tests of high moist wheat grains (30-45%) were made with a head-feeding combine. Time of harvesting, combine settings and drying conditions were evaluated through comparison of operation precision and quality of grains and flour. Experiments demonstrated that 45% of moisture content grains were harvestable with no machine trouble with a chaff rate of the grain outlet less than about 5%, total grain loss of less than about 2%, and damaged grain of less than about 1%. Harvesting of around 40% moisture content grains with rapid drying can provide better quality than harvesting with lower moisture content after rain fall. Harvesting with a low rotation speed of threshing cylinder and normal operational speed improved the flour color. The color differential in comparison to that harvested by binder was less than 0.6.

  • Development of the Secondary Prototype and the Practical Test

    We developed the first prototype of a roll baler for chopped material and bale wrapper in order to minimize the workload of harvesting and ensiling maize. After studying the problems related to commercialization, we developed a secondary prototype of a roll baler that improved and stabilized bale forming. We also developed a prototype of a bale wrapper that shortened the wrapping time. Tests were conducted to verify the practicability of developed machines at different places under ten different working conditions. The test results demonstrated that the machines performed stably with high adaptability to the present work methods including headland management. The developed machines exhibited excellent quality of the ensiled silage. Furthermore, the machines could be used for forage crops other than maize, verifying the high practicability of the secondary prototype. The developed machines were commercialized in the spring of 2004.

    In this study, soft X-ray imaging systems are examined as an evaluation method for the internal quality of fruits (peaches, pears, and apples). An imaging system using an X-ray generator, a fluorescent plate and a monochrome CCD camera was used for acquiring transmission images of the fruits. As a result, split-pits and rotten cores of fruits were detected through the X-ray images in real-time. Furthermore, by using an X-ray generator with tunable output power, we determined that suitable parameters for the internal quality evaluation of apples were a voltage of 70kV and a current of 3mA. However, the discoloration disease of fruit flesh could not be clearly detected because the normal and abnormal flesh parts exhibited too little difference in water content.

    A front loader-type handling device having one more degree of freedom than the traditional one was developed. It was confirmed that the handling device could pick up three 20-kg containers placed on the carrying pallet. Picking-up trials of containers placed at 12 different positions were performed. In the trials, the trajectory controller guided a 15.4-kW agricultural autonomous vehicle to a position to handle containers and then the containers on the pallet were lifted up with the handling device. The containers were successfully lifted up by 11 out of 12 positions. As a result of the experiments, the possibility of automatic picking-up operation by using an autonomous vehicle was confirmed. However, the error of guiding increased when the steering speed increased, and picking up of containers failed. Therefore, the guiding accuracy needs to be improved.

    In this paper, we demonstrate an automatic system for carrying a pair of milking units in tie stall barns that could significantly reduce labor. Before making a system prototype, we performed a time chart analysis to acquire data on milking routine efficiency in a one-man operation for 50 cows/man⋅h. One man operates four automatic carriers mounted on two milking units. Data was also obtained to determine if the carrier velocity (0.2-0.3m/sec) in this system is suitable. The formula for the milking routine including the automatic factor was derived from the time chart analysis. The milking efficiencies of the ordinary system and this new system were compared using this formula.

    The carrier with frictional drive wheels didn't move well on the branch rail between two cows on the existing manual carrier rail. It was impossible to milk two cows from a milk tap due to the vacuum loss when the milking unit fell. In the next trial, the carrier was designed to run on the rail with branch-point diverters and a pair of milk tap couplers was made. These prototypes worked well, and were placed in a real tie stall barn. The reaction of cows to the motion of this carrier was studied. In addition, we clarified the design policy of a whole system containing an obstacle check sensor, a milking unit and a home position.
