In this study, a near-infrared transmittance measurement system was developed to measure moisture and protein content in a single kernel of rough rice. Calibration model with R=0.943 and RMSEP=0.788% w.b. for moisture content could be obtained using partial least squares regression. On the other hand, calibration model for protein content was not significant enough in this study. In addition, the thickness of each kernel was measured using a laser displacement sensor to correct the optical path length of each transmittance spectrum, which was then applied to the transmittance spectra of the single kernel of rough rice. However, it was not effective to improve the accuracy of prediction of moisture content by correcting the optical path length in this study.

Field experiments investigated the vertical wheel-load variations of the left rear wheel of a tractor driven at different combinations of static loads and tire pressures. The dynamic wheel load was measured on rigid and deformable grounds using strain-gage-based transducers. Frequency analysis presented a combination of the effects of the ground profile and tire characteristics on wheel-load variations. On an asphalt road, both the nonuniformity of the wheel-tire assembly and tire lugs excited the wheel-load variations at their first- and second-order frequencies, while these self-excitations had less effect as the ground deformability increased during the tests on sandy loam and clay soils. However, the nonuniformity of a low-pressure tire moving on extremely deformable clayey field critically affected the wheel-load fluctuations.

This paper describes a control system of grain return flow by using an impact-type grain flow rate sensor in a head-feeding combine. A control system was used to adjust the clearance of the chaff sieve according to the measured grain return flow. This control system successfully regulated the grain return flow at a desired flow rate. In addition, we measured the quality of clean grain in the grain tank and the grain loss from a suction fan, which was proportional to the grain return flow, using indoor threshing tests. Ratios of damaged grain, grain with rachis-branch, unthreshed grain head, and grain loss from the suction fan were less than 1.31%, 2.77%, 1.44%, and 3.98%, respectively.

We examined the quality deterioration of strawberries packed in practical package presentations, and proposed a new form, featuring a strawberry peduncle not touching the strawberry fruit, to assist in efforts to develop handling and packaging methods that would prevent damage to the fruit. We found that damage caused by friction against other fruit, the packaging, and film, as well as by loading in a conventional package was prevalent. Moreover, we confirmed that the method involving handling with a peduncle reduced damage. It was also verified that the new form of packaging was applicable for preserving quality, since it cuts out all the force to which the fruit is exposed, even vibration.

This study attempts to increase the high-moisture-paddy adaptability of a head-feeding combine. We describe the effect of water-repellent processing in the oscillating separator to improve the selection performance when harvesting a high-moisture-paddy. Adopting water-repellent processing and a water-repellent resin in the oscillating separator enabled water-repellent processing to perform much better than conventional processing. Chaff loss when harvesting a high-moisturepaddy decreased and the selection performance improved. Moreover, durability tests on 8ha paddy fields revealed neither remarkable peeling nor wearing of water-repellent materials. Water-repellent processing in the oscillating separator was thus useful for increasing the high-moisturepaddy adaptability of a head-feeding combine.

This study attempts to increase the high-moisture-paddy adaptability of a head-feeding combine. We introduce a baffle-plate control mechanism with an elastic material that can adjust the open time of the baffle plate according to the flow in the threshing chamber to reduce threshing power when harvesting a high-moisture-paddy. Field tests using a head-feeding combine with this mechanism revealed that threshing power decreased about 7% per day on average compared with the conventional model. Moreover, the baffle-plate control mechanism did not increase chaff loss or threshing loss and did not negatively influence grain quality. Therefore, the baffle-plate control mechanism was useful for increasing the high-moisture-paddy adaptability of a head-feeding combine.

To increase strawberry yields through the use of high-density culture, we developed a system that circulates movable benches longitudinally and laterally past an overhead watering unit, a sub-irrigation unit, and a chemical spraying unit. Each bench can load 13 plant pots, allowing a planting density of 125000 plants per ha. Evaluation of the basic functions showed an operation time of 71.2s per cycle and the consumption of 3.67Wh of electricity per cycle. The movable bench reached a maximum acceleration of approximately 1.47m/s
2 (0.15G) when the lateral movement unit stopped, and in the transfer of the benches between the longitudinal unit and the lateral movement unit no collision between fruits on the same plant was observed. The results show the possibility of high-density culture of strawberry on movable benches.

We developed an E-shaped multipurpose monorail system for use in hillside orchards with slopes of up to 35°. A transfer car on the main monorail, which runs up- and downslope, transfers devices between sub-monorails built at right-angles to the main monorail. The tractor of the sub-monorail system is controlled by remote control. The operation and blowing angle of an air-blast sprayer on the sub-monorail are also controlled by remote control. Hose reel machines on both the main monorail and the air blast sprayer supply agricultural chemical from an agricultural chemical tank installed at the top of the orchard. The efficiency of spraying was 23a/h, and the efficiency of fertilizer application was 18a/h. The rate of harvesting was 1360kg/h per operator.

The objective of this research was to develop an electrostatic pesticide spraying system that had a high deposit ratio for low-concentration and high-volume application. A system which had an outer annular induction charging electrode around a high flow-rate hydraulic nozzle was designed and its charging characteristics were investigated. When the applied voltage on the electrode was gradually increased up to +4kV, the charge to mass ratio (CMR) of spray droplets increased without occurrence of discharge and electric leakage from the electrode. As the gap between the spray cone and the electrode was shortened, the CMR increased. On the other hand, the CMR decreased while nozzle flow rate was increased. The CMR obtained by this system was -0.20--0.45mC/kg with high flow-rate hollow corn nozzle of 0.56-2.6L/min.

An automatic continuous soil sampling system was designed and developed in this paper. This system samples and stores the pulverized soil, which was gathered after rotary tilling, into soil-cans at several sampling positions based on GPS data. After the pulverized soil was gathered into soil-cans, the soil moisture sensor was integrated, which enabled real-time moisture content measurement. The measured data from GPS was synchronized and saved with the position data making it was possible to draw the soil map easily. The required time of the soil sampling on a longitudinal direction in a field of 170m×30m was approximately 50 minutes at 0.3m/s average working speed, and the sampling area was divided into a mesh of 10m×5m each.
