Performance of the Stirling engine is directly affected by the effect of regenerator element. Influence of the material of regenerator matrix element and the bulk density of matrix packed element on engine performance is discussed. The tested engine system with the displacer in which the regenerator was built, had, instead of a power piston, a stainless steel welded bellows element as its power actuator to prevent gas leakage and to reduce friction loss at sealing. The power output characteristics produced by four types of material were greatly affected by the aerodynamic friction as the working gas passed through the porespace in the matrix element. As the density of the packed element increased, the power loss increased, while the indicated power and the net power grew in parallel. This was the reason why the effectiveness of thermal improvement by the regenerative effect of higher density overcame the drawback of greater aerodynamic friction loss. The regenerator might have the optimum material and amount of matrix element packed in so that maximum power can be obtained in the system.

The purpose of this study is to develop a granular type soil disinfector. A DC blower type distributor incorporated a distributing inside cylinder with five or eight outlets was devised to make the machine lighter, smaller and simpler, and also to improve the work accuracy and performance and the effect of nematode control. The distributor devised as a trial produced ringshaped wind, which velocity was 18-22m/s when the fan rotational speed was 3500rpm. The coefficients of variation of distribution and delivey rate were less than 6-8% and 4-4%, respectively. It was prove d that the distributor had stable performance characteristics.
Because the weight ratio of granule pulverized into 0.5-1.0mm size was less than 7% and that of smaller than 0.5mm size was about 2%, it was inferredreasonably that there was little effect of the distributor on the granular pulverization.

The rushes which are the mateial of a TATAMI matting, are usualy dried by using the heat blower type dryer after immersing rush-bundles in mud water. The mechanisum of rush drying process has not yet been fully analized, and the drying test of coated and uncoated single rush was conducted, in which the change of the inner temperature, of the weight and of the diameter of rush throughout drying were measured.
From the observation of micrographs, we can find a lot of pits at the surface of coated rush. The moisture in rush will easily move out through the pits and consequently the drying velocity of coated rush is faster than that of uncoated rush.

The practical purpose of the present work is to obtain the most optimum heat transfer coefficient in pressure cooling system. In order to carry out the work, it was shown, in this paper, how to determine average heat transfer coefficient during precooling of packed fruits and vegetables by trial and error technique using finite element method.
Primarily, the finite element solution of heat transfer in model sphere was compared with analytical solution, and it was confirmed that the exact average heat transfer coefficient can be obtained by this methods. Secondarily, average heat transfer coefficient for packed beds of “Sudachi” was found to be h=24.4W/(m2·K) in the case of cubic stacking arrangement at superficial velocity of 1.62m/s. This method conformed to semi-practical precooler, and the average heat transfer coefficient for packed beds of Unshu Mandarin was h=23.3W/(m2·K) in the case of the random stacking arrangement at superficial velocity of 0.6m/s.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate and control fruit quality of kiwifruit nondestructively during storage and ripening. It was proved in part 1 and part 2 of this study that fruit quality was able to be predicted by measuring cumulative quantity of evolved CO2.
In this paper, the control, method of cumulative quantity of evolved CO2 was mainly investigated. It was shown that cumulative quantity of evolved CO2 could be controlled by temperature and gaseous component of stored atmosphere. Based on the data of organoleptic evaluation, the best taste score was obtained when the quantity of evolved CO2 amounted to about 14500mg/kg. Also the method to control storage and ripenig considering the best eating period was shown.

The respiration rate of fresh vegetables has the fundamental significance in storage, but there were few data available in wide range of temperatures.
In this study, the relationship between respiration rate and temperature of thirteen kinds of Japanease vegetables were measured by modern precise ventilatory method.
Because of respiration being a kind of chemical reaction, the relationships between respiration rate and temperature were fitted to Arrhenius' equation and Gore's equation (Modified Arrhenius' equation).
The heat of respiration in kJ per ton per day was obtained multiplying the respiration rate of milligrams of CO2 per kilogram per hour by a factor of 10.61. The heats of respiration are all a little higher than the conventional values.

The pyrolysis rate of 16 agricultural and forest wastes was measured using dynamic thermogravimetry method and analyzed both by simple reaction and multi-reaction models. The effect of operating conditions of the TG-DTA (Thermogravimetry-Differential Thermal Analysis) system was investigated and the kinetic properties of the materials were discussed.
The result showed that fractional conversion of the waste materials during pyrolysis can be described by both of the models. Heating rate below 20°C/min and flow rate of N2 gas below 180ml/min had no effect on the pyrolysis rate. Regression analysis indicated that the pyrolytic activation energies of the materials, with the exception of rice husk which has high ash content, had significant relationship with the carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen contents.

Distillation liquid waste of sweet potato Shochu which contained high concentration of organic substance was anaerobically fermented with practical scale two-phase fermenter, and the purification of digestive waste, the productivity and utility of biogas were investigated. In the fermenter, anaerobic bacteria decompose organic substance into methane and carbonic dioxide gas. The performance of fermenter was discussed by using COD removal rate, removal ratio of COD and BOD, VFA concentration and the optimum condition of fermentation for the disposal of the waste. In energy collection, the biogas generated rate, the produced biogas ratio α(m3/kgCOD), β(m3/m3 waste) and the concentration of methane were measured, and the efficiency of biogas generation was discussed with the various conditions for anaerobic fermentation. The present study clarified that the biogas generation system with two phase anaerobic fermenter was practically useful for the disposal of concentrated organic waste and produced biogas could be expected as a substitute energy.

Noncontact measurement system for plant leaf elongation and leaf area was constructed by the use of image processing devices, and suitable algorithms were developed. The measuring accuracy was checked by experiments with a modeled leaf, and was confirmed less than 65% of resolution error of digital image. This high performance was based on efficincy of the developed algorithms. To evaluate abaptability of the developed system, growth process of the third leaf of rice plant (Oryza Sativa L.) was analyzed under the condition that environmental temperature was only varied periodically.

Modeling of branching growth patterns for a root system of corn was established on the basis of L-system, considering the root responses to soil density change. This was characterized by hierarchical growth-rules: metarules to describe features of a whole system of root, root-branching rules for relatively regular patterns in a mezzo-small area, and random movement at the growing tip of root in a small area. A root growth model was developed in which the growth movements of smaller area were controlled by the rules of larger regions in a wide range. The root growth model provided good representations of original patterns of root system.

Asparagus calli were exposed to various uniform electric field intensities varied to 100, 150, 200 and 250kV/m. The calli were exposed during each culture period of initial stage, intermittence and succession. The next experiment was carried out with various treatment days and the successive treatmant, and the effects of electric field on the calli multiplication were evaluated.
For the next exposure, the calli multiplications were almost larger than control, independent of the exposure days and field intensity. The exposed calli generally showed larger multiplication and lower percentage of dry matter than control. It appears that reasons were due to the efects of electric field on the suction force of solution by the calli or on the physical and chemical properties of culture medium.
