In a previous report, it was suggested that the concentration of oxygen affected the respiration of cucumber fruit rather than that of carbon dioxide. However, it was not specified whether the effect depended on the change rate of environmental gas concentration or the concentration of some gases. In this study, to make clear the influence of the change rate of the gas concentration, the experiment was carried out under three conditions of the change rate of the gas concentration. Moreover ascorbic acid content was measured in order to examine the influence of the gas concentration change rate. As the result, it was suggested that control of respiration and induction of anaerobic respiration would be influenced by the gas concentration value more than the gas concentration change rate.

Soil chemical properties, relief of field surface, SPAD and grain yield were investigated in a 0.5 ha paddy field in 1999 to obtain basic field information for precision agriculture. The field informations were analyzed to examine their within field variability using descriptive statistical method. Semivariograms and kriged maps of geostatistical analysis were also adopted to examine their within field spatial dependence. The results obtained were as follows; 1) Descriptive statistics of field information showed that the coefficient of variation ranged from 1.63% to 38.7%. 2) Field information showed a high spatial dependence within paddy field. The Q values ranged from 0.31 to 1, and the ranges of spatial dependence were from 15m to 60m, respectively. 3) Kriged maps enable the visualization and comparison of the spatial variability of field information. 4) The causes of spatial variability of the field information could be considered by a field management map.

A pair of bimorph-type transducers was used for impact testing of gas-dispersed agar gel, fruits and vegetables parenchyma. The transmission velocity and quasi-static Young's modulus had the strong positive correlation. Gas volume fraction had little influence on this correlation.

Sprouting of roots and spoilage due to invasion by pathogens are problems of sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.)) storage that are usually dealt with by specialized chemicals. This study was aimed at mathematical modeling of hot water treatment of sweetpotato to solve both problems without significantly affecting the quality. The model could well predict experimental subsurface and center temperatures of the root during heating and cooling phase within 2-5%. Twenty weeks after heat treatment analysis of starch granules did not show significant changes when compared with control. Reducing and non- reducing sugar levels had significant difference but could not outweigh the disadvantages. There was no sprouting in heat-treated samples after twenty weeks of storage compared with 90% sprouting of control samples.

To predict the depression of freezing point for food under high pressure, the suitable conditions of pressure and food have been displayed by assuming foods as psuedo-binary systems. The cryoscopic constants of water increased with rising pressure, indicating the value of 2.22K·(mol/kg)-1 at 196MPa, about 20% greater than that at atmospheric pressure (1.86K·(mol/kg)-1). Freezing point depressions for glucose solutions of 10, 20 and 30% were predicted by using these constants, and compared with observed data. Predicted values coincided with those observed in the all concentrations at atmospheric pressure and 49MPa, and in the concentrations not more than 20% at 98MPa. Freezing point depressions were demonstrated to be able to determine under proposed conditions.

A sensor fusion algorithm for an autonomous vehicle utilizing an RTK-GPS and a FOG as navigation sensors was proposed in this paper. The goal of this paper is to develop the method that estimates a heading angle corresponding with GPS coordinate system. The developed algorithm based on Least Squares Method, could estimate FOG bias in each step for detecting a heading angle. The developed method was examined by simulating with actual data by manual operation, and it could estimate the bias angle with satisfying accuracy on all types of paths, straight, curve, and turns. In addition, the guidance system with this method performed automatic planting at the field with 4.5cm r. m. s. error from the desired path.

An Autonomous tractor that is able to utilize for all type of operations on fields requires travel in a relatively wide speed range, and has to have a mission planner that controls PTO, transmission, and engine speed as well as path planner. In this paper, the Navigation map, which has not only desired path but also settings of PTO, transmission, engine speed, and other functions as commands to the tractor was invented in order to work out both problems of operation planning and path control.
The developed system adopted an RTK-GPS and a FOG as navigation sensors. It could autonomously perform rotary tillage with 6cm error from scheduled path at 1.5m/s by applying the navigation map.

Intracellular water has been known as related to the quality of leafy vegetables. In this study, 1H-NMR relaxation time of water was measured in order to estimate the change in dynamic state of intracellular water of barley seed-leaves with time by using NMR spectrometer. Adding to this, protoplasts were prepared from barley seed-leaves and the function of membranes was examined through the tolerance of protoplasts in hypotonic solution. The results suggested that the decline of functional activities of tonoplast led to the leakage of water from vacuole to cytosol. The water leakage from vacuole causes turgor pressure drop and successive wilting. Therefore, there is quite a possibility that not only weight loss but also water leakage from vacuole plays an important role for the storage of leafy vegetables.

In search for the innovative main frame structure, comprehensive research of the battery built-in frame (BBF) has already initiated in automobile industry. In this study, some preliminary experiments have been conducted under the concept of adjustable location of the frame itself while seeking maximization of tractive performance in accordance with corresponding drawbar pull power. The required rise time of torque for the DC motor was found to be shorter by approximately 1/20 than the one of a diesel engine. Three kinds of axle loads for front and rear housing were provided to identify specific interrelationship among the rear axle loads, wheel slip, and tractive efficiency. These results were compared with the one of theoretical approach for the confirmation of their validity.

In order to develop a coating machine that coats paddy seeds with a coating material containing calcium peroxide (CaO2) automatically, studies were conducted. As a result of these studies, automatic coating machines were put into practical use and were widely used in Japanese water seeding of paddy rice. In this paper, fundamental studies are discussed. By equipping the metering part with an agitator having a 60mm diameter shaft, the problem of the delivery rate of coating material decreasing as time passes was improved. Programs of sequence control were developed by referring to input timing and input rate of water and coating material in the work of an expert. These programs were improved by computer simulation and tests.

The autonomous running technology was developed in order to carry out safety, efficiently, labor saving and high-precise fertilizer spreading operation in sloping grassland. The crawler vehicle was mounted control equipment and sensors; geomagnetic detection sensor, radar Doppler speed sensor, two slope angle sensors. The automatic travel control was carried out based on self-position calculated from sensor values. The automatic travel was done by the setting of running route assuming wide fertilizer spreading on the sloping grassland that had irregular shape and the average slope angle is 11 degrees. The deviation of the crosswise direction to setting path was less than 2.5m, at the end point error was less than 1% in all setting distances.
This accuracy was equivalent to the manual operation by operator.

The local vibrational disturbance caused by engine affects to the operator physically who uses a portable type tea-plucking machine. Therefore, the suitable engineering measures to protect sucha disturbance are of necessity to be implemented. To reduce the hand-transmitted vibration of a portable type tea-plucking machine, several factors of the frame structure related to vibration were investigated. In this work, a ladder-type model which simplified a prototype frame by using the transfer matrix method was employed for analysis. Then, it served in comparison with the bench-test results. Consequently, under the setting of an element length of 5mm, the numerical values were found to be considerably good agreement with the experimental values. It could be assertive that this analytical approach seemed to be sufficiently practical for the designing process of a tea-plucking machine.
