The purpose of this study is to propose the new dynamics of wheels through the theoretical and experimental studies of the “lift resistance” and “perpendicular adhesion”, to obtain design theories of a wheel lug through the analyses of motion of a lugged wheel and the external forces acting on it, and to analyze the dynamics of a tractor based on the results of the above study. In this paper, the influence of the changes of ground contact pressure and the travel speed of the wheel on the perpendicular adhesion ratio, was studied through the development of a sensor which can measure perpendicular adhesion accurately.

From the point of view of the design and human engineering, the vibration analysis including attached equipment is very important for the optimum design of riding tractor. In this study, the momentum equation and the frequency transfer function of a riding tractor with rotary tiller were constructed by using the Lagrange equation to analyze the vibration characteristics due to the forced vibration from the rotary tiller. Furthermore, each parameter was measured to simulate the vibration characteristics. The spring constant and the viscous damping coefficient of the tractor tire were calculated by the logarithmic decrement of the free vibration wave. The characteristics difference between the tractor tire assembled on the tractor and disassembled was clarified, and the prediction of resonance frequency of tractor became possible.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the traveling performance of tracked vehicles on vertical step obstacle. The mathematical model describing obstacle surmounting motion is given in terms of specification of the tracked vehicle and obstacle parameters. Tests were conducted using a scale model on a step obstacle, and the experimental data were compared with the predicted values. It was found that, by the obstacle surmounting motion model considering terraintrack interaction, the surmounting ability for the vertical step obstacle could be accurately assessed. It was also found that the surmounting ability of the tracked vehicle was greatly affected by the geometric shape of the vehicle and the characteristics of the terrain.

Thin layer sun drying experiments done in highly variable weather provided the needed data for subsequent studies on deep bed radiation drying of raw rough rice. The conditions during outdoor natural drying occasionally led to zero drying rates, making it inappropriate to specify a universally applicable model. The effect of radiation on moisture removal is shown by a direct and increasing relationship between incident radiation and vapour pressure difference. Using the least squares method, a drying constant of 0.384 per hour was obtained by plotting the drying rate against moisture difference (M-Me). In almost all the tests done, rough rice surface temperatures were always higher than ambient temperatures, except during overcast sky conditions when the reverse was true.

The effects of milling condition on the whole-meal granularity and moisture was investigated, using three types of milling machine and three varieties of wheat and one brown rice. The whole-meal granularity and moisture were affected significantly by the kind and variety of grain, milling machine and milling temperature. The estimation of whole-grain moisture from whole-meal moisture had poor accuracy.

To evaluate the firmness of fruits and vegetables without destruction, deformed quantity by compressive force was measured within the elastic range. A basic testing equipment (HIT-COUNTER I) was made and tried on kiwifruits to evaluate their firmness. A high correlation to the conventional destructive fruit tester was found, and the possibility of firmness evaluation without destruction was proven. Based on the results, a single equipment for practical use (HIT-COUNTER II) was made, and tested in several laboratories. It was confirmed that the firmness evaluation without destruction was possible in several kinds of fruits. The developed equipment has been produced on a commercial basis, and is beginning to be used in some testing laboratories.

Freezing point depression of some food solutions were measured at various concentrations in order to reveal the characteristics of solid-liquid phase equilibrium. The measurements were carried out with a hand made apparatus that was calibrated before the measurement by some reagents (acid and sugar) with known thermal properties. The results revealed that the freezing point depression of the food solutions deviated from the behavior of the ideal solution with increasing solute concentration. Therefore, the water activity for non-ideal solution was introduced to the freezing point depression equation, which showed very good conformity. Furthermore, by using the parameters a formula of freezing ratio and the relative water activities were derived, which showed deviation from the ideal solution.

Dairy cattle feces was degraded aerobically (composted) in the insulated compact reactor with a 1000cm3 capacity. The temperature of the material and the ventilating air, and the oxygen density were measured during the experiment to calculate the heat production and oxygen uptake rate for dairy cattle feces. The results show that an appropriate indicator of biological activity in an early stage of aerobic biodegradation process is not the rate of temperature change of dairy cattle feces, but the rate of heat production or the rate of oxygen uptake of dairy cattle feces. In particular, the rate of temperature change is greatly influenced by the heat capacity of the dairy cattle feces.

In the previous part, the performance of a trial made sensor module was examined on angular measurement. The performance of two sensor modules on position measurement that had been improved for the purpose of decreasing vibration during rotation is reported in this paper. The result showed that under indoor conditions of area 20×14m2, the measurement error was less than 10cm. The vehicle recognition method in this system was largely affected by environmental lightness. Therefore, the image of a marker set outdoors was analyzed with regards to color characteristics, and an improved method of vehicle recognition using the results of color analysis and the probability density function were adopted. The result showed that during this process, very few misrecognitions occured.

In order to utilize the agricultural vehicle as an autonomous one, it is necessary to schedule the working route in advance. The vehicle simulator was constructed for both forward and backward movements by neural networks. And genetic algorithms were adopted as an optimization method of a vehicle kinematic. By use of these simulators and genetic algorithms, the time series of the steering angles, that are the control input, were optimized and consequently the working routes of the vehicle were scheduled optimally. As this method divides the route between the initial and terminal conditions into some segments under some constraints and finds the optimal route for each segment, it is possible to create the optimal working route for the complicated conditions including both forward and backward movements.

Part 1 and 2 of this series reported on a manipulator, a harvesting hand, and a visual sensor of robot in vineyard. In this paper, an automatization of berry thinning operation was investigated in order to develop a grape production system with robot. The physical properties of grape were measured in the first place. Secondly, a berry thinning hand was made as a trial. This hand consisted of three parts; upper part removed berries, middle part penetrated and shed berries, and lower part cut a bunch to unify its length. Berry thinning experiment was done by using this hand, and the feasibility of the robotization of berry thinning operation was confirmed.

The objective of this research was to develop a multi-purpose intelligent robot for the vegetable production. In the previous report, outline of the robot and its application to the weed control in the hill space were reported. This report introduces the application to the vegetable transplanting and harvesting. Two types of planting finger and two types of harvesting hand were experimented. As the result of this research, it was clarified that the cabbage and spinach seedling could be transplanted by the trial made hand crossed finger type. Potherbs were harvested by a trial-made hand that has reciprocating knife. The existence of seedling and the height from the hill space could be detected by optical fiber sensor.
