A new human operator describing model, “cognition model”, was proposed. In this model, it was assumed that three variables: tractor heading angle θ, lateral displacement yB, and trailer heading angle β, were necessary for the control of a TTC. A simulator of this model based on classical control theory was developed. Using this simulator, theeffects of the three gains of the variables in the forward maneuver of a TTC, were clarified. The results from the field experiments on TTC were compared to those obtained from simulation using the cognition model. This closed-loop model was found to be adequate in simulating the tractrix of a trailer, following a tractor moving in a straight forward path, when the initial trailer heading angle was not zero. From the field results, it was found that an operator carries out a lane change maneuver in multi-stage adaptive control.

Conventional moldboard plow inverts a furrow slice with transverse displacement. Therefore, secondary tillage must be performed after plowing to even the field surface. This paper describes a new inverting moldboard plow which inverts furrow slices at the same position. The fundamental characteristics of the new inverting plow are as follows:
    (1) furrow slices are completely inverted at the same position with no transverse displacement.
    (2) the plow is simple in structure and easy to operate.
    (3) tillage depth is uniform and hard pan is flat.
The new plow was symmetrically constructed with shares, moldboards, and side pressure boards which were perpendicularly fixed to the moldboards. The furrow slices are turned by the mouldboard while changing the direction of flow by the side pressure board. Some experiments in laboratory showed that the furrow slice was sucessfully inverted at the same position.

The purpose of this study is to develop a harvest machine capable of improving the quality of tea leaves. For this purpose, a selective tea-plucking system which is quite similar to the man-plucking method was studied.
This system has twin parallel plucking rolls which have a spiral shaped cut in opposite directions each other. The rolls take plucking action at a hole which is formed by spiral shaped cuts on the surface of rolls and continually moves from low to high position of rolls with while they rotate in opposite directions. In this paper, the relation between the size of the plucking hole and the state of plucked tea leaves was examined. The result showed that in order to decrease the damage of tea leaf and increase the function inducing tea shoot to the hole, one tea shoot must be plucked in one hole, and about 2.5mm of the hole diameter is required.

Using experimental results on rough rice drying with application of heat pump, this study considered a dehumidifying dryer composed of three heat exchangers as a lump-up system, namely, evaporator, condenser and drying column. First, fluid exit temperatures were predicted by having inlet temperatures as inputs to a computer program written after formulating the heat balance equations. Except in a few cases, the experimental values agreed closely with measured values to within 1°C or less. This difference can be reduced further if the sensors are adjusted to measure entering fluid temperatures properly. The computational method and the Heat Utilization Factor attained with these temperatures would be useful for monitoring the operative state of dehumidifier.

The purpose of this paper is to design dehumidifier for drying at ordinary temperatures.
The adsorption characteristics of thin silica-gel layer were measured and analyzed as follows:
    (1) The adsorption process of silica-gel was in the first falling rate period. (2) The relation between equilibrium moisture content and the relative humidity was expressed well by the formula of Chen-Clayton obtained by the method of least squares. (3) The latent heat of vaporization of water in silica-gel was calculated precisely from the Clausius-Clapeyron's equation. (4) The relation between the equilibrium moisture content and the absolute humidity in the same temperatures could be adequately approximated by linear formula.
From the results of above (1) to (4), unsteady state equations for heat and mass transfer in silica-gel particles and air were formulated. Using these equations the simulation of temperature and humidity of air through the fixed thick layer, and moisture adsorption and temperature in silica-gel particles, for the adsorption process was performed. The feasibility of the silica-gel dehumidifier for cereal grain dryer at ordinary temperatures was confirmed by the simulation.

A simple measuring method of respiration rate of grain was investigated. Since respiration rate is usually measured using the adsorption rate of carbon dioxide to some adsorbent, the measuring system becomes fairly complicated.
In this report, the respiration rate is calculated by measuring the decreasing process of oxygen concentration in the air-tight box with the galvanic type of oxygen meter. So, the measuring system becomes simple, and it is possible to measure in short time.
The procedure to calculate the respiration rate is shown, and the respiration characteristics of several kinds of grains are discussed.
In the next report, the respiration rate will be applied as the index of grain quality.

Judgment of the complicated shape of agricultural products such as pimentos was tried with the neural network and the results of judgment were compared with those by human observation. The applicability of the neural network to the sizing and grading system was examined. In this research, several kinds, of neural network with three layer were constructed, and the shape and size of pimentos were judged with this network. The influence of the kinds of input signal to the learning time and the judging results were discussed.
The input signal which could reproduce the original shape decreased the learning time and judging time including the time for computing the input signal. However, the judging results were not so influenced by the kind of input signals and the degree of agreement with the human judgment was not so good. The reason of this result might be partly the quantitative and qualitative difference between the inputs into the neural network and the human.

An easy nondestructive discrimination method for detecting internal quality of watermelon, especially internal crack and maturity was proposed using FFT analyzing techniques.
At first, the relationships between transmitted frequency, velocity and mass and internal quality of watermelons were theoretically analyzed assuming a homogeneous elastic sphere model. Moreover, a simple hitting apparatus was developed to measure the properties of these vibrations and sounds for analyzing the theoretically obtained results. The discrimination of the internal crack and maturity of these watermelons could be carried out using the index obtained from these analyzing techniques. The internal crack ratio can also be described by dividing the difference of the maximum and the second amplitudes in the spectrum by the maximum amplitude.

A simplified method was devised for measuring thermal properties of moist and porous materials like compost or soil. The proposed thermal probe method has a merit of rapid determination of both thermal conductivity and diffusivity simultaneously with simple equipment within 6% relative error.
We measured thermal properties of compost (mixed with dairy cattle solid manure and saw dust) with this equipment. The thermal conductivity and diffusivity were 0.0508W·m-1·K-1, 0.975×10-7m2·s-1 (0%w. b., 20°C), and 0.0956W·m-1·K-1, 0.967×10-7m2·s-1 (57.1%w. b., 20°C), respectively.

Active noise control (ANC), that is one of active control methods to reduce the noise using the interference of sound, is planned to suppress the noise around the operator of agricultural machinery.
By the simulation of adaptive system, the possibility of noise reduction by ANC was confirmed. The results of the simulation showed that the reduction of sound pressure level (SPL) by ANC would be about 15dB, which meant that only a sixth of primary sound pressure could remain. Also, the ability of adaptive system to predict the amount of noise reduction was confirmed. This ability is valid and available to optimize the configuration of ANC system.

The universal use tractor monitor called “implemate” was developed, by which a high field working accuracy or maximized energy efficiency can be obtained on the tractor operation, and by which a tractor field-work can be measured sufficiently on the study.
In this report, the hard- and soft-ware construction of the monitor is described. The monitor can provide the operator with instant access to critical performance data, such as real travel speed, shaft rotational speed, flow-rate of materials, field capacity or efficiency of the practice which hitherto not been available during operation. The monitor can be adopted to universal use and is given consideration to safety. In the next report, the influence of environment to the monitor performance and how to utilize the monitor to a tractor will be described.

This study is to clarify the optimum condition of combustion, concerning fuel feeding rate and air flow rate, through the analysis of exhaust gas, for the purpose of obtaining the fundamental data on combustion control. Burning experiments were carried out under the condition of 25 to 50kg/h fuel feeding rates and 0.02 to 0.1Nm3/s air flow rates.
The results provided the relationships between fuel feeding rate and air flow rate to set up the optimum combustion, and the optimum excess air ratio were in the range of 1.3 to 1.6. The exhaust gas was mainly composed of N2, O2, CO2 and CO. Sensing only O2 content in the exhaust gas might be sufficient to establish a combustion control system.

As a counterplan for non-chemical control of cucumber in soilless culture, the sterilizing effects of ozone on nutrient solution and the tolerance of cucumber plant to ozone were evaluated.
When the microconidia of Fusarium oxysparum f. sp. cucumerinum were exposed to various ozone concentrations and for various periods, the concentration of 0.25mg/l was considerably effective and 0.4mg/l was complete, but 0.10mg/l was not effective. On the effects of exposure period, there was not significant difference among these experimental treatment sections.
By soaking the plant root into ozone solution, the concentrations of 0.2-0.3mg/l caused injury of plant growth but 0.1mg/l caused little injury. Therefore, a practical and effective method should be as follows: the filtered solution is stored at regular intervals in a tank, and exposed with about 0.4mg/l, and then returned back after decreased to below 0.1mg/l.
