A Savonius windmill is known for the fact that it will work even the wind blows strongly or weakly. It also can receive the wind of any direction. Its drawback is the lower efficiency compared with other windmills. The main goal of this research is to increase the effciency of the Savomius windmill by findimg out a better rotor bucket shape for concentrators.

The possibility of predicting flowing phenomena of grains in processing by distinct element method was discussed. As a basic gravity flow, the discharging phenomenon from the slit of flat bottom container was chosen. White rice and glass beads were used as experimental materials. By comparing between experimental and simulation results on macroscopic flowing states, we investigated on parameters to express the flowing characteristics of grains by the simulation. Simulations by considering the rolling friction of circular elements and by using pair elements were effective methods to the quantitative agreement between simulation and experimental results in the change of free surface position with time. The orientation of particles which was characteristic in the flow of white rice could be expressed by the simulation by using ellipse elements.

A watermelon harvesting robot, which has hydraulic manipulator to handle heavy matter, was developed. As watermelon is large and heavy, harvesting of watermelon is regarded as a suitable operation to estimate the performance of manipulator. Harvesting experiment on the farm was conducted using the harvesing robot. The positioning accuracy of manipulator, the success ratio to grasp fruit and bruises on the skin of fruit were measured and/or observed. As the result, even when there was 54.3mm of position error between gripper and fruit, the robot could harvest without bruises on the skin of fruit. The success ratio of harvesting by the robot was 65%.

The adsorption isotherm of polished rice was investigated. The Chen-Clayton's adsorption isotherm equation which was obtained empirically was useless for the rice operating at higher humidity, because it had an infinite point of equilibrium moisture content at saturated air condition. Therefore, based on the Chen-Clayton's equation, a new empirical equation including the concept of saturated moisture content was introduced. Using this modified Chen-Clayton's equation, the adsorption characteristics of polished rice were analyzed and the latent heat of vaporization of water in polished rice was estimated. Furthermore transfer in the polished rice during sorption was observed.

Image recognition experiments of crisp head vegetables were done to develop a selective harvesting robot. Recognition of 2-D image of crisp head lettuces was first tried by using a TV camera according to the difference of the shadow pattern. It was possible to check up the crisp heads above a proposed diameter and to measure their rough sites. However, in some conditions, the recognized site and the size were not accurate. For this reason, the manufacture of 3-D vision sensor was tried to directly analyze the shape of crops and preparatory experiments were done. The sensor could measure the 3-D shape of lettuces in 4 seconds.

A cherry tomato harvesting robot equipped with a 3-D vision sensor was made for experiment. The 3-D sensor emitted three laser beams which contained two components of wavelength; a red (wavelength: 685nm) and an infrared (830nm). Three PSDs were used to detect the lights which were reflected from the crop. The shape of the crop was measured by scanning the laser beams. Red ripe tomatoes were detected by the ratio of the red to the infrared reflected signals. For the purpose of collision avoidance, the locations of the stems and the leaves were recognized by the image processing software.

The effect of ionic wind generated by corona discharge on drying of shiitake mushrooms were investigated with a drying system using a conventional hot air drying method by corona discharge. The experiments were made under different conditions of applied voltages and hot air flow rates at a constant temperature and humidity. The drying rate in the ionic wind treatment (ionic wind with hot air wind) was 1.1 to 1.6 times greater than that in the control (hot air wind only), and consequently a reduction in drying time was attained. The shrinkage of the dried shiitake pilei was reduced in the ionic wind treatment, which showed a possibility of the ionic wind for improving quality. Slight browning of the dried shiitake gills was observed in the ionic wind treatment. The effect of the ionic wind on drying of shiitake mushrooms was increased with increasing the applied voltage, and decreased with increasing the hot air flow rate. The ionic wind velocity was found to be expressed as a linear function of applied voltage.

We proposed the supporting system of decision making for agricultural machinery renewal by using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) to select a best substitutional plan in the renewal case through examination about renewal condition, number of substitutional plan, and evaluation item. As a result, it was clarified that the number of all substitutional plan in the renwal case, and the ordinary AHP model and the cost/benfit analysis AHP model were able to be evaluate substitutional plan by using comparative evaluation items in disuse and addendum of agricultural machinery. Furthermore difference between ordinary AHP model and cost/benefit analysis AHP model were discussed, and the reason of difference selecting order of substitutional plan according to these two models was clarified.

An incubation method was proposed for improving cooking properties of rice and developing health food from brown rice. Effects of incubation of brown rice on the gelatinization of its milled rice flour were investigated both kinetically and morphologically. During incubation in a 30°C seed bed, enzymes existing in brown rice were activated. Amyloplast walls were destroyed, and starch granules were decomposed by enzyme catalytic reactions. Milled rice flour of the incubated brown rice had different viscosity curves in gelatinization tests. The peak viscosity and break down of the milled rice flour changed in two stages, i. e. an increase stage and a decrease stage, according to duration of incubation. Simulation with a first-order reaction model showed that the gelatinization of milled rice flour could be expressed by an Arrhenius equation. Incubation in the 30°C seed bed raised the activation energy of gelatinization from 1.157×105 to 1.492×105J/mol.

The mass and the distribution of wear on tines were discussed in part 1 of this study. In this paper, the influence of tine parameters, such as hardness, shapes, coating materials, coating locations and shank types, on tine wear are investigated to determine the tine which will give the minimum abrasive wear. The influence of spring shank and rigid shank on the tine wear are also examined. The experimental results showed that coating materials and shank types have a great effect on tine wear resistance. The coating position and tine hardness also had effects on the wear resistance of S-type spring shank tine. The wear resistance of the tine which is thickly coated (1mm) with Tungsten Carbide on the front surface is two times higher than that of the steel tine normally used in Japan.

The combine testing for paddy was performed to study the effect of harvesting date, harvesting time, opening and closing angle of baffle plates, material-other-than-grain (MOG)/grain ratio, MOG feed rate and varieties of paddy on the performace of the prototype combine. On the series of these tests, the basic performance characteristics were investigated, such as grain losses at the straw outlet and chaff outlet, processing loss, MOG passing rate through the concave, percentage of damaged grain, percentage of grain with rachis-branch, and power requirements. Through these tests, the prototype combine was found to have a high performance for paddy. The problems for practical application were also investigated.

Several instruments are commercially available for rice taste evaluation. However, there is little objective data whether these instruments can be used instead of sensory test, whether the instrumental taste evaluation has correlation with each other. Accordingly, sensory test and instruments analysis were carried out using 61 rice samples. The correlation between instrument's taste evaluation and overall flavor by the sensory test was low, and consequently, these instruments were not accurate enough to estimate taste evaluation value. These instruments can be used for classifying rice into qualitative groups; such as, good, medium, and poor taste one. Conversion of taste evaluation among instruments were impossible because of low correlation among them. The standardization of the taste evaluation scale promises evolution and popularization of the instrument analysis.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the factors effecting the milking performance of auto-milking systems. We introduced a railway diagram to the auto-milking operations. The milking performance was affected by the cow's entering time into milking room, the cow's teat position, sencing speed of the milking robot and the vaccum level when milking. The entering time decreased in proportion to their experience. The teat position affected the teat cup attaching time. The improvement of sencer raised the sencing speed. The higher level of vaccum increased the milking speed.
