JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe objective of this research is to propose a grain flow system of a head-feeding combine using a grain flow model. This model was built using the delay times for transportation, the distribution between clean grain flow and grain return flow, and the grain loss from suction fan. Within this model, the input was the flow rate of threshed grain dropped onto a grain pan, and the output was the flow rate of clean grain transport into a grain tank. To identify parameters of this model by experiment, we used two impact flow rate sensors, and measured the flow rates of grain flow to grain tank and grain return flow while the grain loss was neglected assuming it was enough small. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the capability of image information in obtaining the fineness of soil clods by real time measurement, as defined by mean-weight-diameter (MWD). Thirty-four kinds of image features were measured from the surface images of all the soil samples, which included 26 variations of MWD. The effective features, which showed significant differences among the 26 levels of MWD by analysis of variance, were extracted and used for multiple regression analysis. The proportion of the regression equation for estimating the MWD was over 0.95. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn this research, the spatial variability of amylose and protein content (hereinafter referred to as rice taste elements), using two test fields with different nitrogen fertilizer applications, was investigated. In test field 1, nitrogen fertilizer was applied with seven nitrogen treatments at both basal dressing and topdressing. In test field 2, nitrogen fertilizer was applied with seven nitrogen treatments at basal dressing and with variable rates at topdressing, depending on the plant growth. Although the rice taste and those elements showed a negative correlation, the applied amount of nitrogen fertilizer at topdressing showed a positive correlation with rice taste elements. Rice taste element prediction models were established using the rice taste elements in test field 1 at harvesting with reflectance of multi and hyperspectral remote sensing in the heading stage. The rice taste element prediction model was validated using the rice taste elements in test field 2. RMSEC (RMSEP) of models using multi and hyperspectral remote sensing were 0.774 (0.883) and 0.117 (0.122) at the model of amylose, 0.862 (0.965) and 0.136 (0.121) at the model of protein.View full abstractDownload PDF (1016K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe objective of this study is to develop a calibration method to get the exact position of the 2-dimensional laser scanner mounted at the front of an automated vehicle from a reference coordinate system before the automatic navigation in an orchard application. The research is limited only in calibrating a 2-dimensional laser scanner that gathers distance and angle data of the objects in front of it. The methods used in this research are Hough transform, Euler rotation theorem and LSM (least squares method). The calibration results identified the exact attachment position of the laser scanner with respect to the vehicle coordinates. Finally, field test runs for autonomous guidance with developed calibration was conducted to confirm the travel accuracy improvement. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSBecause the capability of inspecting all sides of each fruit has become a highly desirable feature of a grading system, a new type of rotary tray was developed, as a part of a grading line, to flip a fruit over during quality inspection by color and monochrome machine vision systems. Each grading line consisted of 348 rotary trays and ran at a speed of 38.1m/min. Since this grading machine had 6 lines, it was capable of sorting a total of 504, 000 fruits per day. However, the processing rate of this grading system has reached only 85% of the expected level, because of the operator's fruit unpacking rate. The automated packing and unpacking systems were considered to provide the grading system a fruit tracing capability in addition to labor saving.View full abstractDownload PDF (13796K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSFundamental study was made to construct a hybrid power system composed of passive-type polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) and electric double-layer capacitors for agricultural electric vehicles. For numerically simulating the behavior of the hybrid system, a fuel cell equivalent circuit model was developed and the model parameters were determined based on an electrochemical theory and experimental results. By means of numerical simulation with this fuel cell equivalent circuit model which can represent the actual current-voltage characteristic reasonably well for a passive-type PEFC unit, the efficiency of the passive-type PEFC controlled by the authors' original power control method named Time-Splitting Method (TSM) has been investigated under various conditions (TSM frequencies, duty ratios and external load resistances), and the improvement of the efficiency of this PEFC with TSM has been confirmed.View full abstractDownload PDF (1108K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSFarm based waste digestion plants return higher profit if the emanating methane (CH4) rich biogas is purified and used in agricultural vehicles, as it is used to generate heat and electricity. For this reason, ignition process of diesel engines, the prime movers in farms, was thoroughly reviewed because it directly influences the resulting toxic emissions. Methane, coming from natural gas or biogas, when fed into these engines along with diesel, was found to reduce nitrogen oxides and particulate matter but increased knocking at high loads and misfire at light loads. Several solutions have been studied all over the world and some reached the market stage; however many challenges still face the advance of this technology.View full abstractDownload PDF (4045K)
