Late Dr. J. Yabe tried the cultivation of tubercle bacilli on the saponin containing media, and out of 17 strains gained 2 which had lost completely their acidfast nature, and observing these 2 strains regain their acid-fast character on Petroff's media, designated them TY
1, and TY, . Concerning this fact, he was of the opinion that it is due to the change of metabolism, and may be in the near future, able to point out tubercle bacilli among the blue stained bacilli in sputum and in tissues by Ziehi-Gabbet's method. The further study of several characters of TY was made by late Dr. T. Yabe, Dr. M. Shibata, Dr. Y. Kumagai and Dr. Y. Kobayashi. As they stated we could not find any difference either morphologically or biologically between TY and fungi hitherto called strepthotrix. The pulmonary strepthotricosis is a rare disease which is mostly diagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosi, and differentiated from the latter only by demonstration of strepthotrix instead of tubercle bacilli.
