In the anther culture of tobacco, plantlets have been most easily obtained frorn anthers at the middle uninuclear pollen-stage. It is thought that the pollen grains at this stage are most sensitive to the differentiation of embryoid and the sensitivity decreases thereafter with the progress of pollen development. The author, however, found that, in the culture of anthers at the late uninuclear stage, the sensitivity could be recovered by subjecting them, prior to incubation, to a centrifugal treatment. By this treatment, as many plantlets as those from the anthers at the middle uninuclear stage could be obtained.
