Due to the progress in anesthesiology and with the control of body metabolism pre- and postoperatively, surgical removal of the pancreas head which has hitherto been regarded as nearly impossible has become a possibility. The death rate due to this condition has gradually decreased and where, until recently gallbladder, stomach or duodenalanastomosis was the only operative method and was performed only to prolong life, the fact that chanses of permanent cure may be obtained through this operation is a progress of recent years. Although there are still points for improvement in operation procedures and in pre- and postoperative treatments and the long term evaluation presents a pessimistic view, an opinion is held that early diagnosis and early operation would improve the results. It is believed that there is no fear of functional disturbances post-operatively at least in those cases localized in the head of pancreas.

It has been the usual biometrical procedure that the facial and nasal heights are measured from the nasion to either the gnathion or the subnasale as in the bone measurement. It is well known, however, that the exact determination of the nasion in the living body is very difficult if not impossible. We feel, from our experiences, that confidence can hardly be placed on the values of the facial and nasal heights obtained by other authors unless they have had experiences of measuring the same in at least 50-60 cadavers. The senior author, while serving as the Committee Secretary, proposed to the Committee for Research on Japanese Standard Physical Constitution of the Japanese Anatomical Society that the measurement be taken in two ways, one, from the nasion to the gnathion, and the other, from the supraorbitale to the gnathion, and this proposal was adapted by the Committee in spite of some oppositions. Henceforth, the new procedure has been used by the Biometrical Group of the Society. There is as yet no information on a possible discrepancy in values obtained by the two methods of measurement described above. It is felt for this reason that a publication of our results are well warranted. The material of our investigation consists of students from Tokyo University and Juntendo University and farmers in Yamagata Prefecture. Results and Discussion : - The results are presented in table. It includes ours and those of the Committee for Research on Standard Physical Constitution. The latter are considered somewhat unreliable in comparison with ours due to the fact they are the combined results obtained by a number of authors on the bases of different techniques in the determination of the nasion. Since errors introduced in measurements cannot be entirely eliminated, the differences found in the data taken from different groups of our material require careful evaluation, at least in the present state of our studies. The difference in the values obtained from the new and old methods is to be used only in converting the value from the new method to that of the old and never theother way. Conclusion : 1. The differerce of the absolute values obtained from the new and old methods is approximately 8mm in both the facial and nasal heights. 2. In regard to the indices, the difference is about 5.5 for the facial about 8.0 for the nasal. 3. Sexual difference is not recognizable in so far as the data on hand at present are concerned. Even if a difference is present, it would be too slight to be used for the conversion.

Effects of chinoline, hydrocinchonidine derivatives and organic mercuric compounds on the motility of boar spermatozoa are studied. 8-Oxychinoline, chinine, 5'-bromohydrocinchonidine-6'-azo-2, 6-diaminopyridine triacetate were effective, but no parallelism was found between their spermatocidality and combing forces for Mg++.

    (1) Pharmacological effects of 3-methyl-pentyne-ol-3 on cats, rats, rabbits and toads were studied. (2) 3-methyl-pentyne-ol-3 is a hypnotic drug with scarcely any side effects and very little toxic effect. Every method of administration, i.e. subcutaneous, oral, intra-peritoneal and rectal, is effective. (3) 3-methyl-pentyne-ol-3 has no analgetic effect.

The rate of morbidity and of industrial accident of a mineral mine workers during the period of 1951, and correlation between both rates were examined statistically. Both rates showed a seasonal fluctuation, high in summer, and low in winter. Examined in relation to the type of labour, both rates were highly correlated (r=±0.961), and the correlation was significant at less than 1% of significance level. The higher the intensity of labour, the higher were both rate. From this fact, the moment underlying this correlation was suggested to be the accumulation of industrial fatigue in the workers. When examined in relation to the working place, both rates showed also a significant correlation (r=0.808) at the 5% level of significance. The result of observation of morbidity rate in Various diseases was reported.

From genetic studies on the pedigree of a family of Japnese Chess experts (Syogi Iemoto) and of Bernouli, a mathematician, I came to following conclusions. (1) The talent in Go and Syogi (Japanese Chess) requires inborne ability similar to that required for mathematics. (2) In both of these, hereditary abilities in memory, reasoning and synthetic thinking powers are necessary. (3) The talent in these fields seems to be transmitted from parents to children as a dominant trait in contrast to the non-talent which is recessive. (4) The phenotypic expression of the trait is influenced by other factors. (5) Some inhibitors associated with sex-determing factors seems to be concerned with the trait, giving rise to sex-limited type of inheritanse of the trait. (6) The inhibitor gene in double dose suppresses to a large expression of the gene for the developement of the talent; in a single dose its suppressive action is much less and consequently the talent developes markedly. (7) The inhibitors seem to vary in their action.

    (1) Principles and course of development of tension recoding were outlined. (2) The structure, character and application of mechano-electronic transducer (RCA 5734) was introduced. (3) With the recording set using 5734, the tension curve of single muscle fiber prepared from sartorius muscle of toad under isotonic condition was recorded satisfactorily.
