Recently many professors have experience to meet the student whom guidance is difficult. The professor of science and engineering has many experiences because there is much time to meet the student in class, experiment, design drawing, thesis for the master's degree. The professor can't solve the problem using his own experience. Firstly, this paper explains the mental problem of the student. Next, the proper way of coping to the problem is explained. And, it is written how to decrease the stress of the professor. The contents of this paper are composed the mental problem of student and student support by professor.
Acquiring skills for global communication in English is one of the most urgent tasks we face in today's world. Especially in Japan, a major shift is taking place, from approaching English as one of the liberal arts, to teaching English as a practical tool for global communication. Particularly at the university level, which has a direct interface with the business world, various efforts are being made in teaching technical English communication. In this paper, I would like to present an approach for the effective incorporation of technical communication into the existing university-level pedagogical framework, based on the English education program currently in use at the Faculty of Engineering, Toyo University, Japan.
A teaching strategy for fundamental physics through logically dividing and solving physics problems is proposed, with the aim of improving the physics teaching in an introductory course of technology at universities. In the proposed scheme, which has been applied to sophomores taking a class for heat and thermodynamics, students are required to depict the logic flow in a chart, illustrating the logical structure of an assigned physics problem, and submit a paper to the instructor. Questionnaires have been conducted for clarifying the effect of the proposed problem-dividing strategy on the students' attitude toward learning. The data taken are analyzed by use of multivariate analysis. It is found that the students' evaluation is correlated closely with a students' feeling of attainment. Improvement in score has been shown in an end-of-term examination, suggesting that, by mastering the proposed strategy, students become more proficient in logically expressing their thoughts.
An inclusive half-year exercise system for mechanical design and drawing education is introduced. This includes plan of a mechanical system (part of tension-torsion testing machine), design by Microsoft Excel and sample figures, completion of technical design report, drawing of an assembly and parts, and self-check according to the check list. With help from teaching assistants redesigning of the geometry and material selection is also obligatory. Final goal of this exercise and the role of teaching assistants are clearly defined. These lead students to try to consider for themselves. According to the students' estimates, skill for PC, and ability for design, drawing and completing technical reports are increased in spite of the toughness of the problem. For further progress, the number of teaching assistants and sample parts are requested.
In order to stimulate young students' interest in science and engineering, Kanazawa Institute of Technology has been holding a science school to junior high school pupils of Science Club attached to Kanazawa Kids' Science Center. The science school hold in November 2003 was on "Manufacturing and Measurement of AM Radio". It was found that pupils could understand the principle of AM radio and were satisfied with the science school. This paper reports the experience of the science school and results of pupils' feedback.
Two exchange programs in engineering between universities in Japan and Canada are described in order to explain the significant benefits gained by the undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the academic staff who participate, and to highlight key principles generally followed in the design and execution of exchange programs.
It seems to be difficult to use engines as educational materials in mechanical engineering lab courses because of lack of budget, space, time and instructors. In this paper, some ideas of using engines with small amount of budget, without changing timetables, with small space and only with one instructor are introduced. We have been working on the program for four years, and obtained good educational results. Three items are used to evaluate students' performances; checking preparative works with short exams, checking behaviors on the day of lab courses and checking assignments posted after the lab courses. It is suggested that preparative works are the most important to obtain higher educational results.
All new students should buy mobile PCs, because the personal computer (PC) is becoming one of the main teaching aids in university education. Some universities are trying mobile PCs for classes and extracurricular activities in case studies. On the other hand, typical types of local area network (LAN) have some problems from a computer virus and a security point of view. So we need to prepare a new LAN system which considers these problems. In this paper, we will introduce a case of mobile PC, and the construction of a LAN with the IEEE802.1x/EAP TLS cross certification and the quarantine system of computer viruses.
It is important for professional engineers to remain motivated to keep up with new developments in their field. This study focuses on using community service to inspire students to apply monodukuri to create tools that support self-learning. Results of the study show that subjects who volunteered for local projects were able to appreciate the value of its social meaning, and apply this knowledge to designing and producing tools that assist self-learning in the field of engineering.
In corporate education, it is necessary to design educational programs so that engineers can expand their expert knowledge in short period, and obtain higher activities in their behavior pattern. Each subject prepared to engineers is characterized by many keywords weighted. A fundamental index was first introduced in order to measure the characteristic proximity among subjects. The index, which is useful for the decision-making support, can be calculated in the vector space model in the information retrieval technology. We showed that there are remarkable differences between the proximity indices and correlation coefficients among subjects, and the proximity indices are more informative. From the visualized proximity indices, we can recommend systematic educational program scheme just for an engineer or a section in a corporation.
Effectiveness of homework arises from its regularity and quick feedback to it. In our classrooms, we have assigned homework in each lecture to students with an aim to improve their understandings and writing skills; they are required to describe their answers, not to choose, nor to fill prepared answers. To attract students, it is crucial to give feedbacks to them as soon as possible, particularly in the next lecture. However, this kind of homework needs a lot of time to be marked, which makes difficult for teachers to give quick feedbacks. To realize both the effectiveness and quick feedback, we have developed a Web-based application to cut away teachers unessential work such as distributing homework, gathering submitted papers, arranging them, and so on; teachers can concentrate on their central work such as marking and advising.
