9-
cis-Retinoic acid and 9, 13-di-
cis-retinoic acid were synthesized and their biological effects on human acute promyelocytic cell line HL-60 were analyzed. 9-
cis-Retinoic acid was threefold more potent than all-
trans-retinoic acid in assays to inhibit growth and to induce differentiation of HL-60 cells. The activity of 9, 13-di-
cis-retinoic acid was as high as that of all-
trans-retinoic acid. Both 9-
cis-retinoic acid and 9, 13-di-
cis-retinoic acid acted additively with all-
trans-retinc is acid on HL-60 cells. Both 9-
cis-retinoic acid and 9, 13-di-
cis-retinoic acid acted synergetirally with 1α, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D
3 to inhibit HL-60 cell proliferation. Thyroid hormone (T
3) did not affect the action of the retinoids on HL-60 cells.
