In order to design such instruments that can be easily mastered by even non-expert users, careful considerations as to how intended users would actually use them would be needed from the early design stage. This paper reviews some representation systems for the interaction process taking place between a user and an instrument and examines which cognitive aspects, such as long-term memory, short-term memory and perception, they are able o address. Considered representation systems are task-analytic, local-connectionint and goal-struchre approaches. This paper suggests that none of them has sufficient analytical power, thus, on application, it would be important to select proper representation according to the cognitive aspects to be analysed.
