We have developed MUSE/NTSC converter system which enables to watch the MUSE-encoded signal using conventional TVs and realized it by LSI chips. In order to extract full information from MUSE signal, we prepared many display modes, and many operation parameters presettable from the external controller. We also considered to reduce the system cost by minimizing the circuit and by putting some peripheral devices in the LSI. As a result, the system was constructed by 2 gate-array chips. 1 custom made chip, and field memory chips.

The technical standard of the multi-channel PCM sound broadcasting system using communication satellite was decided in January 1990, based on the similar system for broadcasting satellite service which had been developed by NHK and confirmed by experimental transmission using BS-2 satellite. Many important technical parameters were decided to be consistent with those in the broadcasting satellite system, for example, modulation method, transmission biterate, sound coding and signal format. The prototype common indoor receiving unit for both Systems has been developed. The characteristics of the receiving unit and results of laboratories tests are described in this paper.

Various data broadcasting services such as teletext, facsimile, telesoftware and telemusic can be transmitted using DBS Data Channel. A common transmission control system is necessary for transmitting these different services altogether. The authors consider the functions required for the system and propose means for implementing them. The 7-layer model in line with OSI reference model is applied to data broadcasting systems.

Because various data services are transmitted through DBS Data Channel, it is effective to prepare a conditional access system which can be applied to all the services. Therefore it is desirable to specify same transmission protocol for control of scramble. This paper reports the fundamental construction of the system and the basic function of its elements. The authors also propose here a receiver of this system using IC card, which can be used in common for the various data services
