In recent years, bright and high resolution reflective LCDs without backlight for compact portable OA and AV equipments are strongly required. As a reply to this requirement, we have proposed a new achromatic reflective STN-LCD with one polarizer and one retardation film, in which the reflector is placed on rear substrate. The electro-optical properties of the cell are numerically analyzed and it is found from the result that high brightness as well as high contrast ratio are obtained by optimum designing of retardation film and device parameters, but that no such solutions are obtained without a retardation film.

Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulator (LC-SLM) is basically a high rcsolution optical-to-optical image converter. The device embodies a photoconductor, a light reflection mirror and a liquid crystal layer. It is important that the photoconductive layer has a high resistance in dark. In this paper, uses of reverse biased n^+-i-p^+ photoconductor are discussed under an additional DC bias for the compensation. Contrast and response time of the display are developed by applying this DC bias.

plasma display panels, we call them PDPs, are one of the flat panel displays, which make use of discharge phenomenon for indication. color indication panels make use of Photluminescence that was excited and emitted a fluorescent substance by ultra-violet rays. Therefore, information that were connected With ultraviolet rays are important for higher brightness and luminous efficiency that are problems for color panels utility. In this experiment, Ne+xe gas was used for working gas and we measured about spectra emitted from the states concerned with ultraviolet rays emission of 1470A.

For the purpose of realizing the very fine barrier electrode ac plasma displays, we fabricated the testing panels with 0.5mm pitch by sandblasting method. By investigating we changed the materials of dielectric layer and sandblasting powder. We were able to exclude the damage of dielectric layer by sandblasting. We fabricated upper electrode by utilizing lift off method. As a result, we were able to improve the fabrication method in barrier electrode ac plasma displays.

A multi-imaging x-ray pinhole camera was coupled to an x-ray streak camera, and 2-dimensional images with 10-ps temporal resolution were reconstructed by handling the streaked image data by computers. The spatial resolution was 15 μm and the observed x-ray spectral region was 2.2-4.9 keV. Core plasmas of laser fusion targets were observed by this method and the structure in the x-ray image was found to be rapidly changing with 10-ps time scale.

Forming processes of ZnS:TbF_3 thin films aud ZnS thin films were analyzed by TEM. And Annealing effects on ZnS:TbF_3 were obserbed using TEM. Accordingly the following results are obtained, (1) Forming processes of ZnS and ZnS:TbF_3 Were investigated. (2) Tb atoms or particles disturb the formation of recrystalization of ZnS film. (3)Grainsize grow larger by annealing.

Organic Electroluminescent (EL) devices were constructed with newly synthesized anthracene derivatives as the emitter materials, in order to study the difference of charaeteristics between these derivatives and 9-[2-(9-anthracenyl)ethyl]carbazole (An2Cz). The structure of devices was ITO-electrode / hole-transport layer / emitting layer / electron-transport layer / Mg-electrode. Efficiencies of the devices utilizing 10-[2-(9 anthracenyl)ethyl]phenoxazine (An2Po) and 10-[2-(9-anthracenyl)ethyl]phenothiazine (An2Pt) were 1.5 and 3 times higher than that with An2Cz. Luminance of the devices with An2Po and An2Pt at fixed current density decreased more slowly than that with An2Cz.

White light emitting SrSe:Ce/ZnS:Mn multilayered thin-film EL devices, in which SrSe:Ce shows blue emission with good chromaticity, have been prepared in view of the development of full color EL display by using R, G and B color filters. The SrSe:Ce and ZnS:Mn films are prepared by multi-source deposition and electronb eam evaporation techniques, respectively. Lunrinance of white EL of about 150cd/m^2 was obtained by annealing the films at 400℃ for 1 hour after the deposition of both SrSe:Ce and ZnS:Mn films. R, G and B emissions were obtained by filtering through R, G and B color filters. The device showed R and G emissions with nealy the same chromaticity as those of CRT, however, the chromaticity of blue emission should be improved, althogh it ha much better CIE coordinates than that of the SrS:Ce thin-film EL device.

The evaporative deposits of barium compounds from a dispenser cathode causes serious problems of cutoff voltage drift and stray emission in a CRT gun. We developed a new type dispenser cathode containing Y_2O_3 Which significantly could improve the cutoff voltage drift in CRT gun without any deterioration of other characteristics.

In the previous paper, we have reported that a distribution pattern of the grid emission current in the beam forming region of a CRT gun can be measured with an anode-hole-scanning method. This paper describs the calculation method of the grid emission by assuming the Gauss distribution of cathode emission.

A back modulation type flat CRT was developped, that can applicate for large area and flatness. The flat CRT was vibrated from physical phenomena. In order to eliminate the vibration, an arch cathode flat CRT was developped. The arch cathode flat CRT consists of many arch cathode, a pair of holizontal deflection electrodes, many vertical addressing electrode, and an anode. In this present study, deflecting-focusing experiments were done, and the experimental results are reported.
