Hitachi, Matsusita and SONY have proposed the consumer-use VTR format for the 1125line/60Hz Japanese Hi-Vison system, and announced the specifications of this VTR. In these specifications, we adopted a base-band recording method which dose not require any band compression. In making this adoption we took into consideration two typical uses, recording of broadcasted signals and playback of software tapes. And the width (1/2inch) and the thickness(13um) of the tape enable 3 hours recording with almost the same size cassette as is being by consumers at present.

We have developed the new compact 1/2" Hi-Vision VTR. This model is equipped with newly developed LSIs and hybrid ICs, owing to which it obtained the smallest and lightest body as well as the lowest power consumption among the UNIHI VTRs in the market. In addition, a scanner with a centrally located scanner head wheel and newly developed tracking servo for automatic tracking during playback provide highly stable RF envelope output and maintain high level of interchangeabillty.

Presently, in magneto optical disk memory field, a lot of efforts are spent for high density recording and its readout. We also have been looking for outstanding features for magneto optical disk memory. As one of new features. CONCURRENT ROM-RAM optical disk memory composed of phase pit information and magneto optical information could be very attractive since the memory capacity is ideally twice as large as a conventional one and both of ROM and RAM are reproduced simultaneously by means of laser feedback method and so called differential detection readout. We have confirmed the feasibility in our basic experiment. However, we also found out the polarization noise generated by the edge of phase pit is quite dominant.

We developed a new type video disc player for baseband HDTV signal. In this system, HDTV signal is divided into 2 channels and recorded on the both sides of a 30cm diameter disc. This player reproduces them with two optical pickups at the same time. As a result, we can provide 30-minutes playing-time (CLV disc), even using conventional laser diode (λ=780nm).
