Fiber optic plate(Fop) is a bundle of thin glass capillaries and acts as a two dimensional light guide. It is mainly used as imaging devices such as image intensifier, printing tubes and so on. Recently new applications of the Fop have been growing rapidly in display field. In this paper, we describe operational principle, structure, basic characteristic, manufacturing process, and applications.

Based on a combination of surface structure and refractive index modifications, a phase grating was fabricated from a thin film of photoreactive polymers composed of methacrylic esters. The phase grating with a cross-section shape of a sinusoidal wave acted as an excellent optical low-pass filter for a charge coupled device having high values of a modulation transfer function in the low frequency region.

The merits of some new lenses and their technical background are mentioned. The J13ax9B is a super light weight ENG lense weighing about 1kg. Over these 10 years, the weight of this lens has been reduced to less than half of that of it's first generation, the J13x9BI. Due to the inroduction of EDTV, higher performance is demanded for the larger lenses. Adopting internal focus, the P20x14 is a high performance EDTV coresponding lens.

Zoom lens with aspherical lens for camcorder has been successfully and realizes designed. This lens has single aspherical glass lens, size-reduction of 30% than conventional zoom lens. And this lens also realizes the high-resolution at the same time.

A digital audio signal transmission system in which hige-quality digital audio signals are multiplexed in the video carrier by using an quadrature modulation method is proposed. This system is fully compatible with the NTSC terrestrial television system. We have developed the new methods for this transmission system such as the dicode modulation, the line interleaveing and the line comb filtering to improve the compatibility with the existing NTSC system.

An NTSC compatible wide aspect EDTV system named "Mode 2" which is one of letter-box type was proposed. The experimental hardware of this system had also been developed. In June 1990, a terrestrial broadcasting experiment of wide aspect EDTV using this hardware was achieved successfully at HDTV colloquium '90 in Ottawa, Canada. This paper describes the system configuration for this experiment.

On Middle format(equal area) of wide aspect EDTV, it is necessary to consider side panel prosessing - decomposition of side panel and center panel, transmission, and recomposition of them. First, we investigate a transmission model of broadcast, from transmitter to receiver, next we introduce waveform smoothing to reduce transient distortion, and get the optimum smoothing width.

This paper describes a method to hide side-panel signals on conventional NTSC receivers, which can be used in a middle format (equal area) widening method. Side-panel signals, which are rearranged to top and bottom areas of the image, are transformed to two kinds of components: low-energy component and high-energy component. The high-energy component is physically hidden in the normal vertical overscan of existing NTSC receivers, and the low-energy component is rearranged to the top and bottom areas. Computer simulation results indicated that the proposed method can reduce the artifacts on NTSC receivers.

An intermediate type wide aspect EDTV with NTSC compatibility is proposed. In this method, letterbox processing and variable side compression are used for wide aspect with some procssings for picture quality. Especially we study multiplxing method that band-widths of high frequency components are changed by picture shape for effective transmission. Then, we simulate this adaptive processing and take good results.

The authors Implement the proposed signal processing for telecine Images In IDTV. In this method, Y/C separation and scan-line doubling can be improved by using the characteristics of the telecine Images converted from 24 cine-films/s to 60 TV fields/s. Hardware experiments prove that telecine image Is distinguishable by detecting 5-field sequence, and the vertical resolution Of the reconstructed image Is improved in the moving area as well as in the still area.

A new ringing compensation technique by synthesis of waveforms is proposed. The technique is applicable for the sharp cut-off filters in modern TV receivers and new systems such as IDTV and EDTV which require increased horizontal resolution. The proposed compensation technique is subtracting the ringing compensation waveform from the filter output signal that contains ringing around the edges. This technique has excellent property of not to effect the frequency characteristics of filter. Moreover, the experimental results prove that the ringing between successive edges of signal, which had been difficult to be removed, is perfectly compensated.
