In this paper a brief historical background on the remote sensing technology is given. We also introduce basic techniques which are frequently used in the image processing of the remote sensing data. Review on major remote sensing satellites, including their basic sensors is given. Finally, remaining problems in the field of remote sensing are discussed with respect to monitoring the global scale changes in the Earth.

The hardware implementation of a 130 Mb/s (H4 rate) HDTV CODEC based on the DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) algorithm is studied for transmission in Broadband ISDN (BISDN). The intrafield 2-dimensional ( 8×8 ) DCT, nonlinear block adaptive quantization of 6 classes with switchable operation between Y and Pr, Pb, and the 4 parallel signal processing possible by DCT are also implemented in the CODEC. Performance evaluation confirms that the developed CODEC has sufficient picture quality and is practical for HDTV distribution use and HDTV conference application.

First we suggest the idea of Multimedia Document Architecture (MDA). This architecture has META-structure which provides structuring methods for any media to be described. And the architecture can manage many multimedia resources with same concept. And then we propose data structures named Video Document Architecture (VDA). This architecture has three structures, Time-domain structure, Scenery Structure and Content Architecture, and each structure describes video data form its own viewpoint. These structures enable the nonprofessional users to edit video stream and/or video object. The idea proposed here gives a key to build general multimedia system.

This paper presents a pedestrian counting system which emploies x-t spacetime image processing. Counting moving objects needs three tasks; object extraction, object separation, and object tracking. Object tracking has been one of the difficult problems in motion image processing. By using the fact that an object usually forms a closed region in the spacetime image representation, we can avoid the problem of object tracking. A two dimensional spacetime image forms the skewed projection of objects when the image is gathered with a slit which is placed angular to the object position and velocity. The skewed projection generally contains the information of object shape and velocity. Count of pedestrians can be easily computed from the number of regions and the 0th, 1st, and 2nd order moments of each region. The sign of the 2nd order of moments is used to discriminate the direction of walking. The detail of system description and the experimental result are also shown.

Now, it is most generally to exchange the imformation of characters with their codes. But there is a problem in that, the characters both of foreign language and national language can't be displayed by the terminal if it doesn't have their pattern in its ROM, that is to say, there are no way to display the unknown characters. And it is irrational that many patterns of characters are used in China, Japan and other countries common, but their codes are different in these countries. By the way, if the common components of characters can be segmented and the imformation of their structure can be coded, it will be possible to describe the fonts of the unknown characters. From this viewpoint, we suggest a structural character font database system which consideres the strokes to be the components of characters. With this system, we will be able to communicate with the codebook which will be created from the database. And we propose an algorithm of the segmentation of characters due to the frequency of the appearance of strokes, this makes the segmentation of characters easier. Finaly, we propose the structural codes from the peculiar strokes of character, in order to make the fast reference be possible.
