We have developed a New Black and White STN-LCD (Super Twist Nematic Liquid Crystal Display) technology which has high contrast ratio (CR) using a single LCD layer for an Automotive application. This technology has superiority in erectro optical characteristics, structuer and manufacturing cost compared with other LCD technologies used for automotive information display. We believe that this information display technology will be widly used for applications ranging from high-class cars to popular-class cars due to the excellent visibility of New Black and White STN-LCD technology.

"Bigger" and "Wider" are two of the key movements in today's broadcasting industry. Television screen sales are shifting to large wide screens, and production studios are being modernized to make possible the "simul-production" of HDTV and NTSC programming. However, various problems concerning the studio monitoring environment arise when simul-producing HDTV and NTSC, such as picture size, picture tube quality control, color reproduction differences and monitoring environment. Work is under way to provide a standard production environment, and development of new imaging devices is eagerly awaited in the ever changing world of television production.

Picture quality of displays with hold type temporal-luminous characteristics is investigated, by subjective tests using an octuple-rate CRT display with an octuple field rate of television. Picture quality of displays with exponential characteristics is also investigated. Picture quality of these displays is deteriorated along with motion velocity of pictures. A method using a display shutter and double-rate displaying method are considered for improvements of the deterioration. As results, significant improvements are obtained by the shutter with apertures less than 50%. Similar improvements with 50% shutter are also obtained by the double-rate method.

We have already developed a device with a photo-sensor to measure a display's MTF. Though the device was useful in the measurement with two methods (with sinusoidal waves and with an impulse), there were still some problems to be solved such that the device could not be used to measure the response due to the sampling by the CRT shadow mask. This time, we solved these problems. The modified device has a MOS linear imaging sensor to measure the MTFs including the sampling effect, in both horizontal and vertical directions. We describe the specification of the device and measured data on HDTV CRTs.
