Various data broadcasting services are possible, using the Data Channel of the digital subcarrier/ NTSC system and that of the MUSE (HDTV) system. NHK has proposed a Data Channel transmission control method with indirect identification of the packet attributes. Transparency, flexibility, and efficiency of the transmission channel can be secured with this method. This paper describes the further consideration of the transmission control method. The experimental transmission system has also been developed and the transmission characteristics were confirmed. The result is reported.

A basic construction of ISDB transmission signals was investigated in our last report(1). This report presents an ISDB transmission signal frame structure which provides good flexibility and extensibility. Some signal structures for the compatibility with existing BS data channel broadcasting are also described. A new accsess supporting technique, slot control, is introduced. The slot control technique serves to reduce the signal proccessing rate required in the ISDB reciever circuits.

HDTV MUSE signals had been transmitted via INTELSAT satellite by using of Frequency Modulation. But this system needs high C/N on the international transmission lines, in order to keep high grade video quality. So we have developed a digital transmission system for HDTV MUSE signals at 60Mb/s. This system is applicable to a 36MHz band-width transponder of the INTELSAT satellites using QPSK modulation. This paper describes an outline of this transmission system and introduces HDTV broadcasting of the winter Olympic games in ALBERTVILLE, FRANCE by using this system.

This paper deals with a computer simulation study on a 64QAM transmission with a bit rate of 60Mbps in coaxial CATV systems. It is shown that BER of 10^<-10> is obtained by using RS(255,239) code at the lowest C/N described in the regulations of CATV. It is also shown that equivalent C/N degradation due to reflections in CATV lines is around 3.5dB. However this degradation can be reduced by introducing an equalizer.

A digital audio signal transmission system, in which high-quality digital audio signals are multiplexed in the video carrier by using an quadrature modulation method, is proposed. The channel coding method has been studied. Considering compatibility with the NTSC system, the dicode is the most suitable. Regarding the quality of multiplexed signal in a new quadrature modulation receiver, the partial response class 4 is advantagious. By employing the dicode as the transmission channel coding and by converting the received signal into the partial response class 4 after I+D processing, a new receiver system with an excellent performance has been proposed.

This paper outlines NTV's wide aspect "New NTSC" format, and also examines how wide aspect EDTV can be introduced into broadcasting stations. Both the basic concept and sample system are presented with an eye to making the new system as compatible as possible with existing NTSC signals. Brief descriptions of a wide aspect EDTV camera, switcher, and EDTV encoder for use in a station boroadcasting system are also included.
