A 40-inch-dia. planar pulse memory PDP requires the precise alignment between the front and the rear glass plates to reproduce bright Hi-Vison pictures while ensuring the stable memory operation. Regarding the fabrication process, the following problems are appeared : (1) inaccuracy accompanied printing process, (2) distortion of the glass at firing process. The item (1) could be reduced to the allowable levels by the introduction of new screen-meshes with high aperture ratio and the improvement of printing condition and the item (2) by the optimization of the cooling speed at firing process, Moreover, new screen-meshes made it possible to narrow both respectively. the barrier rib and the anode, resulting in the increase in the luminance : 93cd/m^2.

We investigateed characteristic of thick-film-printed MgO films which were evaluated by the results of vacuum evaporated MgO films. Developed MgO paste of T-5 showed the excellent characteristics of low sustaining voltage, wide memory margin, high luminous efficiency, and Stable operation for long time. The value of Sustaining voltage of T-5, however, is higher than that In order to solve this of evaporated MgO film by about 50V. problem, we developed new MgO paste of T-5α and thin T-5α film was able to be fabricated by using 400α mesh screen. Consequently, sustaining voltage with thin T-5α film was proved to be the same value as that of evaporated MgO films.

The FED has a very high degree of redundancy because a pixel of the FED consists of the high density of microtips, the characteristics of high speed addressability and low power consumption. silicon, Molybdenum, and Tungsten are generally used as the cathode materials. we fabricated field emitter arrays with n type silicon wafers. In the process of silicon etching, we used two types of solutions. One is an acid Solution which is isotropic, another is an alkali solution which is anisotropic. we measured the field emission current with fabricated field emitter arrays. The characteristic of field emission are discussed.

The conventional method of preparing YAG:Tb requires repeated firing to form single-phase cubic material. When a SrF_2, BaF_2, YF_3 or AlF_3 is used as a reaction reagent, however, only a single firing produces single-phase cubic material. The solid-liquid phase reaction occurs during firing are produced between the raw oxide materials as well as other by-products. The particle growth is facilitated by a process in which, small YAG particles first gather in the contact area between large YAG particles where fluoride melts and forms a liquid film, then dissolve and finally precipitate when saturated in order to reduce the surface energy. Using this information about the role of flux on synthesis and the effect of flux on particle growth, efficient phosphors with small-particle sizeand phosphor screen with sharp strie-edge and high packing density could be obtained.

The Chemical durability of AMLCD glass substrates was evaluated with various acids such as HCl. HNO_3, H_2SO_4, HF, buffered hydrofluoric acid (BHF), and alkali. NaOH. When treated with BHF, the surface of the glass substrates turned dim, sometimes. Microscopic obserbation revealed that the dim area corresponded to a lot of tiny hillocks. It has been concluded that there exist an effective composition of BHF as well as a recommendable cleaning condition of glass substrates to prevent the generation of tiny hillocks.

Thermal dimensional stability is an important requirement for glass substrates for Active-Matrix LCDs. Compactions of Code 7059F were compared among glasses with different thicknesses and different thermal histories. Compaction of annealed Code 7059F was smaller than when it was unannealed. Compactions of Code 1735F and other glass substrates were also measured. Glass substrates with higher strain point tend to show smaller compaction at the same thermal cycle.

The possibility of applying COG technology is discussed to realize a low-cost HDTV using an LCD. A circuit model of multiconductor transmission lines on the COG module is extracted by the electromagnetic field analysis. The measured frequency response of impedance is identical to the simulated result. We suggest that the COG technology is applicable to the projection TFT-LCD for the HDTV by using the expanded model.

The backlighting illuminair using the cold cathode fluorescent tube has been rapidly used for the light source of the graphic LCDs. Recently the full-colored TFT-LCD using the multi-media personal computer needs the illuminance of above 140cd/m^2 for fine and bright visualizations. We investigated the brightness and the viewing angle characteristics of the backlighting illuminair arranging the prismatic-lens film. The illuminance of new backlighting illuminair is above 4500cd/m^2 for the electrical power of 12.6 watts as the display size of 10.4 inchs.
