Surface-Discharge ac plasma displays have the characteristics such as wide viewing angle, and they are recognized as leading display devices for full color display with a large areas. A barrier ribs electrode as plasma display with the new structure of electrodes has the advantagesof high luminance and high luminous efficiency. Then we analyzed the action of the barrier ribs electrode ac plasma display by the computer, the surface potential distribution, the wall charge distribution, and the variation of light emittingregion became clear. Then we observed the image in the streak of luminescence with the streak camera, and compared the result of the measurement with the result of the simulation.

Flat panel display to use field emitter arrays (FEA) for electron source is called Field Emission Display (FED). In the present paper, we fabricated the FEA with focus electrode for the purpose of focused electron trajectories, and measured the emission current-voltage characteristics. We measured the energy distribution of the field emitted electrons by an ac retarding field method.

Organic thin film EL devices have been extensively investigated in recent year. We synthesized N, N'-diphenyl-N, N'-(3-methyl phenyl)1,1'biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD) and two diamine derivatives synthesized in the same way, and exmined them thermal stabilities by measuring these glass transition temperature(Tg). We fabricated thin film double-layer structure utilizing these diamine derivatives as a hole transport layer and measured luminescent properteis and deterioration characteristics of these devices.

We have developed a automatic brightness and color control system for the multi-screen display system. This system is composed of a multi-screen display, a video camera, frame memories, and a personal computer. The video camera takes a whole screen image of a multi-screen display, and the frame memories memorizes the brightness data which is taken by the video camera. The personal computer calculates the brightness data and controls the multi-screen display system in order to equalize those color and brightness characteristics. Consequently, with this new automatic control system, 1/8 color-difference can be obtained and also only 1/7 adjustment-time is required.

We developed a auto-setup digital convergence system for projection TV set which can readjust the convergence with one touch operation. The system can measure the dislocation of the image in each overscaned area where 8 photo detectors are located one respectively. Therefore, it can recover the good convergence state at any time which was adjusted before misconvergence. In conclusion, we got the convergence accuracy less than 0.3% of the screen height as well as the recovering time less that 2 minutes in 50-in. NTSC TV set.

For improvements in electro-optical properties of liquid crystal (LC) devices, it is important to clarify a molecular orientation state in the LC cell. In this paper, a novel observation method for a visualization of a molecular orientation state in the LC cell by using a UV curable LC material is proposed. A slice of LC layer is observed by using a polarization microscope. As a result, the molecular orientation states in a cross-section of the LC cell with a plane electrode and a slit-patterned electrode structure are visualized by using this method.

Molecular alignment of liquid-crystal affects on Electro-optical characteristics in display device. Rubbing on the alignment surface is most reliable process for obtaining uniform molecular alignment in manufacturing. This process, however, has some demerits such that dusts of cloth fibers contaminate the rubbing area and electrostatic charge damages thin film transistors. New process in place of rubbing is required in manufacturing the display panel. In this paper, fine structures of the surface of the alignment substrates are observed by atomic force microscope (AFM) and the mechanism of liquid-crystal molecular alignment is investigated. As the results, the rubbing process induces geometrical anisotropy in specific condition and has not monotonous dependence of the rubbing condition.

We have recently proposed a new OCB (optically compensated bend) mode, which shows wide viewing angles and fast response, by using a bend alignment liquid crystal cell and a biaxial film. However, at voltage-off state, the liquid crystal alignment in this cell becomes splay state. To change the alignment of the cell from splay to bend alignment at beginning, we have to apply an initializing voltage for a few seconds to a few minutes depending on various parameters. In this paper, we propose a solution of this problem, namely, a polymer stabilized bend alignment. It has been confirmed that the bend alignment at voltage-off state and the desired properties of the OCB-cell have been obtained.

A 18.2-in.-diagonal p-Si TFT-LCD with 960×517 color pixels has benn developed. For fabricating high performance poly-Si TFT's on a 450×350mm large glass substrate with good uniformity, the substrate-heating Laser annealing technology and the two-step laser irradiating method has been used. An high frequency Xe-Cl excimer Laser was employed. The first step and the second step of irradiation were carried out with intensity of around the threshould for re-crystallization and with intensity of re-crystallizing enough, respectivily. High-performance multi-gate TFT's with off current of under 10pA and μFE of 100cm^2/Vs were achieved. Finally, We have succeeded in the development of a 18.2-in. diagonal TFT-LCD for HDTV with excellent uniformity characteristics in TFT mobilities and off current.
