There were heated discussions about the retern of the northern territories at the same time of President Gorbachev visit to Japan. It was most important things for the newsmedia to introduce their lifestyle and tell their live messages of the people in the northern territories. It took about six months to realize these plans with many arguments and cooperations between parties concerned. Satellite transmissions for news program mainly were held from Kunashiri and Shikotan islands between April 8th and 18th, 1991.

A new set of LSI chips have been developed to construct Clearvision receiver system. Main digital Signal processings are Motion Adaptive 3-Dimensional Y/C-separation and Motion Adaptive 3-Dimensional Scan Conversion. These processings enhance picture quality for NTSC color TV signals. processing functions have been integrated in three LSI chips. It is Possible to rationalize scale of system, these LSI have included Line-memories and D/A converters.

An MMIC family was demonstrated for a low noise block downconverter (LNB) for use in direct broadcast satellite (DBS) receivers operating from 11.7 to 12GHz. A 12GHz low noise amplifier (LNA), a 12GHz mixer (MIX), a 10.7GHz dielectric resonator oscillator (DRO), and a 1GHz IF amplifier (IFA) were designed with 0.5μm-gate pulse-doped GaAs MESFETs for the first time. Noise-free pictures of satellite broadcast TV could be seen by using this LNB and a parabolic antenna forty centimeters in diameter.

A QPSK demodulator system using a digital PLL for carrier recovery is studied based on computer simulation. We propose a double-loop-system (PLL and AFC) and a digitally controlled AFC which can expand the frequency pull-in range of the PLL. The results show that the system can track ±2.4MHz and it can be locked within 0.5sec when it operates in C/N=2dB.

In MUSE, pictures' resolution depends on the characteristics of filters such as pre-filters and interpolating filters, and moving pictures have lower resolution than still pictures. We are trying to improve moving pictures' resolution. Extension of the fiters' passband and implementaion of a vertical low-pass filter have been simulated with computer in order to investigate the improvement of moving pictures' resolution. As a result, we have found that we can improve moving pictures' resolution with little disturbance caused by aliasing and ringing.
