This 2nd generation compatible EDTV Encoder can convert component/composite signals into EDTV-II letter box signals. The processing signals are fully digitalized and the rack mount size is a very compact 250 mm height. Video Inputs are D1 Progressive (Serial), D1 Interlace (Serial), D2 Interlace (Serial), and NTSC Composite Interlace (Analog). Also the equipment can select multitlexing or not of reinforcing signals VT, VH, HH, HH-precombing for EDTV-II, and can output by multiplexing the necessary reinforcing signals. Matching the multiplexed reinforcing signals and discriminating signal are added to 22H (285H). Video Outputs are D2 serial, D2 parallel, and Analog Composite.

To realize stable live-TV transmission from mobile, a digital 800 MHz FPU (Field Pick-up Unit) using OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) modulation scheme has been developed. The results of the field trials in Kyoto show that the OFDM-FPU is a powerful tool for the live-TV transmission of marathon races. In this paper, transmission characteristics of the OFDM-FPU are presented with operating conditions. Relationship among the field strength, the bit error rate and the delay profiles are also discussed.

Both the spectrum efficiency and the service availability are improved by introducing a hierarchical transmission technique into the satellite ISDB (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting). In addition, a new technique that can control the transmission schemes with TMCC (Transmission and Muitiplexing Configuration Control) signal enables the ISDB signal more flexible. The signal inform the demodulator how the transmission parameters are configured. This paper discusses the effect of a hierarchical transmission and the functions of TMCC in satellite ISDB.

In ISDB (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting), it is necessary to multiplex video, audio, and other data services efficiently, in consideration of the requirements for real time capability and the quantity of coded data for each services. For the video coding, VBR (variable bit rate) method is better than CBR (constant bit rate) method from the view point of efficient using of channel capacity. In this paper, the Peak-Rate-Constant-VBR method is proposed for the MPEG2 videos multiplexing into a transmission line with a restricted capacity, together with other data services. And the effectiveness of this method is discussed.

A concept of Terrestrial ISDB (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting) system for the next generation digital broadcasting is proposed. Main technical elements of the system are BST-OFDM (Band Segmented Transmission of OFDM signal) and SCM (Slot Control Multiplexing) which efficiently allocate program component of ISDB to segmented bands. TMCC (Transmission and Multiplexing Configuration Control) signal controls the receiving function of receivers and provides the system flexibility and extensibility. The management of time information is also discussed with relation to the BST-OFDM scheme assuming MPEG-2 TS (Transport Stream) as an example.

OFDM is expected to be a suitable modulation method for digital terrestrial broadcasting systems. One of the reasons is that it makes it possible to construct a Single Frequency Network (SFN) and to make effective use of the frequency bands. In a SFN environment, however, some receivers will obtain their signals from more than one transmitter. And this causes two effects ; intersymbol interference and degradation of frequency characteristics by echoes. In this paper, the BER (bit error rate) distribution within the coverage area of SFNs in a variety of the transmitter numbers by computer simulations on a virtual plain is described. Finally we suggest a method to improve quality in a coverage area.

Discrete adaptive equalization refers to using discrete error data rather than a continuous error signal to compute adaptive filter coefficients in a noise reduction equalizer. An experimental adaptive equalizer for 32QAM using this technique is presented, with laboratory results.
