One of the objectives of Mathematic in the new Course of Study for lower Secondary School in Japan is to help pupils understand characteristics of basic plane figures. It is important. to achieve this. for pupils to draw plane shapes and to learn by thought experiment. The authers developed an educational computer software to assist pupils in learning by thought experiment. The present report describes the developed software and its applications.

We have developed an experimental image retrieval system as an application of the CD-ROM with huge storage capacity. In this CD-ROM disc contained are image data of some 400 works of fine arts, character and audio data for explanation of the works and data tables to make information retrieval easy. We can retrieve an image of desired art works by operating a key board of a personal computer in accordance with lists of directions represented on CRT display. It takes approximately 3 seconds to display one full size still picture (640×400pels) of a desired work on CRT screen as we used a CD-ROM drive with twice as high rate of data transfer as a standard CD-ROM drive. In one possible application, we can use this system for introduction of a museum and works in its collection to visitors by the sequentially displaying images accompanied by text and speech.

The paper deals with mathematical fundamentals of colour and its emulation by colour graphics of such small computers like personal computers and work stations. The proposed system is intended for colorimetric education, however, it can be used to cultivate the sense of colorimetry and system of colours not only for colour engineering but also for artists and designers related with colours. It includes, 1) emulation of the standard colorimetric observer, 2) introduction of several kinds of chromaticity diagrams standardized by the CIE, 3) evaluation of uniformity of the spaces by means of the MacAdam's tolerance ellipses, and 4) introduction of the Munsell colour spaces. Each issue of the items is demonstrated by graphs and by actual colour images displayed on a CRT. Additionally, colours are selectively displayed by their names so that the names of colours are related with actual colours. The paper stresses how to realize accurate colour reproduction.

A high sensitive FRAMING STREAK CAMERA with 3 plug-ins (framing, fast and slow streak), using the imaging tube which incorporates a micro channel plate, has been developed. The framing plug-in has framing speed up to 3 million frames/s with the shortest exposure time of 50ns and number of frames can be exchanged to 1,2,3,4 and 8 frames. Framing operation is achieved by applying stop voltage to deflection plants and applying shutter voltage to NCP output electrode.
