EuroDisplay'96 was held at Metropole Hotel & Conference Center in Birmingham, England, October 1-3,1996. In parallel with the conference, the 1996 International Active Matrix Workshop was held on September 30,and the display exhibition as EID '96 was held at the hotel, October 1-3,1996. At the AM Workshop, a-Si and p-Si TFT LCDs were discussed in 14 invited papers. At the EuroDisplay '96,CRT vs. FPD was of a central issue. The late news paper about"Surface-Conduction Electron Emitter"was highlighted.

The 16th International Display Research Conference (EuroDisplay '96) was held in Birmingham from October 1 to 3,1996. 45 papers related to Passive LCDs were presented. The dominant technology was Passive LCDs which represent almost 50% of the Poster Papers. Particularly, the polymer stabilized liquid crystal modes and the reflective modes were discussed actively.

At Euro Display '96 and AM Workshops held on the previous day, AM LCDs were eagerly discussed. Presentations concerning with AM LCDs at Euro Display '96 were itemized as follows ; 4 papers of a-Si TFTs, 11 papers of p-Si TFTs, 1 paper of a TFD, 3 papers of IPS TFT-LCDs, 1 paper of a PALC and the others. Among them, the Paper of"17.3 : AMLCDs and Electronics on Polymer Substrates"was highlighted. It seemed to be the historical experiment on"System on Panel Architecture".

This paper summarize the following 3 sessions of the Euro Display '96,session 7 : Materials, session 13 : Addressing and Image Quality, and session 16 : Colour filters/Black Matrix. These papers are primarily concerned with high quality display and new applications, including liquid crystals and polymers, driving methods to improve image quality, and arrays for high aperture ratio.

In Euro Display'96,there were 10 papers for CRT sessions-much of them from Japan and 7 papers for FED sessions. In contents, new CRT products have been presented, such as Croma Clear CRT of which shadow-mask has slot-halls instead of dot-halls, and Low Power CMT lowering the anode voltage from 24kV to 20 kV. As for the basic technologies, a new gun system with 30% larger main lens and a landing correction system (Elan system) were proposed. In addition, the basic investigations of the Aperture Grille vibration and the simulation on the dynamic behavior of CRTs under impact loading were presented. In the FED session, a new microlithography technologies using transparent microballs aiming at the larger screen size and a new type of the flat panel using Surface-Conduction Electron Emitters have been proposed.
