JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe hypoglycemic activity of a potent aldose reductase inhibitor, 1-[(p-bromophenyl)-sulfonyl] hydantoin (p-Br-PSH), was tested. The compound was not effective when orally administered to rabbits at a dose of 25 mg/kg, whereas statistically significant hypoglycemic activity was observed at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThis study was undertaken to investigate the effects of ascorbic acid (ASA) and ferrous ions on renin release from renin granules of vitamin E-deficient rats. Male Wistar rats were maintained on a vitamin E-deficient diet for 4 weeks. The renin granule fraction was prepared from the kidney cortex homogenate by discontinuous sucrose density gradient centrifugation. When the renin granule fraction was incubated at 37°C for 30 min in the presence of ASA or ferrous ions, renin release from the granules in vitamin E-deficient rats was significantly higher than that in the case of control rats. Further, lipid peroxide formation was greatly enhanced in the renin granule fraction. However, dietary supplementation of dl-α-tocopheryl acetate (40 mg/100 g diet) or N, N'-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine (80 mg/100 g diet) to the vitamin E-deficient rats for 5d suppressed the simultaneous increases in renin release and lipid peroxide formation induced by ASA or ferrous ions. These results indicate that renin granules of vitamin E-deficient rats are more susceptible to renin relase by ASA and ferrous ions than are those of control rats, and that vitamin E functions to maintain the membrane integrity of renin granules by inhibiting lipid peroxidation.View full abstractDownload PDF (464K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSMutagenic activity, antibacterial activity and enzymatic reducibility of geometrical isomers of several nitrofurans were examined comparatively in Salmonella typhimurium TA100. These biological activities were well correlated to each other, not only between cis and trans isomers of each nitrofuran, but also among all the nitrofurans tested. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSProtein was treated with 2-carboxy-1-hydroxy-4-naphthylmethyldime-thylsulfonium chloride to modify the tryptcphan residues in the chain. The product thus obtained was treated with trypsin and the tryptophan modified fragment (s) was selectively isolated by adsorption onto a Chelating Sepharose 6B column (Al3+ form). (Cucurbitaceae), momordicines I, C30H48O4·H2O, and II, C36H58O9, were isolated and their structures were elucidated as 3β, 7β, 23ζ-trihydroxy-cucurbita-5, 24-dien-19-al and its 23-O-β-glucopyranoside, respectively.
