JOURNAL FREE ACCESSResponse of gastric acid secretion to benzyloxycarbonyl-Trp-Met-Asp-Phe-NH2 (tetragastrin) before and after perfusion of phenolic acids and related compounds was examined in the rat. Tannic acid and gallic acid inhibited the response to tetragastrin after perfusion of these compounds. But protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, salicylic acid, and aspirin stimulated the response to tetragastrin, and sometimes enhanced the basal acid secretion. Possible mechanism of ulcerative action of aspirin is discussed.View full abstractDownload PDF (456K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSEffects of acetylcholine, pilocarpine, histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and nicotine on the isolated canine trachea, bronchus and bronchiole were investigated. In addition, Schultz-Dale test to Ascaris suum antigen on these airway smooth muscle preparations was attempted. Acetylcholine had a strong contractile effect on the trachea, bronchus and bronchiole, whereas large concentrations of histamine and nicotine were necessary to contract these preparations. Histamine was suggested to produce a stronger constriction of the peripheral airways like bronchioles. Pilocarpine showed a selective and remarkable contraction of bronchus. Schultz-Dale phenomenon to Ascaris antigen failed to be demonstrated on the airway preparations.View full abstractDownload PDF (496K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSPolyaminopolycarboxylic acid with at least two ligand nitrogens such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid accelerates the copper-catalyzed autoxidation of cysteine. The extent of acceleration of the reaction is related to the stability constant of the Cu (II) chelate of the polyaminopolycarboxylic acid. N-Hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid, N-hydroxy-1, 3-diaminopropanetetraacetic acid and ethyleneglycol-bis-(β-aminoethylether) tetraacetic acid are the most potent accelerators and those chelating agents have the stability constants of approximately 1017.5.
