Granulated silica gel treated with potassium dichromate solution acidulated with sulfuric acid is used as a detecting agent for acetone vapor which gives orange yellow to intense brown coloration when a definite amount of this agent is filled in a small glass tube and 100 cc acetylene gas containing acetone vapor is passed through in 100 seconds for quantitative determination of acetone vapor in acetylene from the length of colored column of the reagent. Correction of an internal diameter of the detector tube, the relation between the length of colored column of the detector tube and the concentration of acetone in acetylene, and the effect of temperature have been investigated. It was found that a simple quantitative determination of 0.3-6.0% acetone in acetylene was possible.
