γ-and δ-caprolactams were obtained as by-products in the synthesis of ε-caprolactam by the reaction between ε-caprolactone and ammonia in the presence of an ammonium halide.
As the amount of the ammonium halide was increased, the sum of the amounts of two lactams reached 70% of the whole products when a 14% ammonium hydroxide solution was used.
It seems that γ-and δ-caprolactams were formed by the dehydration of the corresponding hydroxycapramides which formed were from ε-hydroxycapramide through 5-hexenamide.
