Reactions between 3, 7-dimethyl-1, 6-octadiene (2) (dihydromyrcene, citronellene or 2, 6-dimethyl-2, 7-octadiene) and t-butyl perbenzoate were studied. Thus (2) was treated with t-butyl perbenzoate at 86-120°C in the presence of cuprous salts, and the product saponified to obtain a monoterpenic alcohol fraction in 24-45% yields. By vapor phase chromatography and IR spectroscopic analysis, the monotrepenic alcohol fraction proved to consist mainly of three components; 3, 7-dimethyl-1, 5-octadien-7-ol, linalool and 3, 7-dimethyl-1, 7-octadien-6-ol, in an approximate ratio of 1 : 1: 2.5.
