Although the prime importance in the treatment of cancer in the head and neck is the eradication of the tumor, due attention should be paid to the conservation of many important structures and functions in the region. These important human functions are phonation, digestion and facial expression just to mention a few. Simple surgical procedures specialized by otolaryngologists are no longer satisfactory.
Of recent, radiotherapy in the head and neck cancer has developed to a superlative degree and chemotherapy to a practical degree although much remains to be satisfied. Our task then will be to develop satisfactory composite attacks of various groups of specialists, using surgery, radiotherapy and regional chemotherapy. This aims at the most effective treatment with the least side effect.
Since 1961, our combined approach to cancer of the head and neck by close collaboration with the radiotherapists has yielded much improved results. This has lead to the increasing number of patients with satisfactory rehabilitation.
    1. Cancer of the maxilla: Combined surgery, radiotherapy and regional chemotherapy have lead to the preservation of important structures and functions even in the advanced cases. Many patients are now allowed to return to the social life and to their previous works.
    2. Cancer of the nasopharynx: Radiotherapy is the first choice. When the effect is less satisfactory, chemotherapy and a window-operation of the palate are done.
    3. Tumors of the tonsils: Reticulum cell sarcoma occupies the majority. Radiotherapy, is the first choice.
    4. Cancer of the larynx: A full dosis of radiotherapy is first applied. Partial resections are done when indicated.
    5. Cancer of the tongue, hypopharynx and esophagus: Radiotherapy is the choice for the majority of cases. Some are sent for plastic procedures.
