Even the lung cancer, which has been found increasingly with years, is not an incurable disease if it is diagnosed early enough and the affected part of the lung is extirpated.
It is the essential point for an barly diagnosis that when patients, especially male patients, in cancer ages complain of any symptom in the chest, roentgenologic, bronchoscopic and cytological examinations are made until these examinations preclude all doubts of lung cancer.
Bronchoscopic diagnosis is the surest method, and it enables the examiner, to obtain direct vision of the cancer, to perform biopsy and to get the bronchial secretion for cytological examinations. Cytological diagnosis consists in finding the presence of cancer cells in the bronchial secretion and the pleural exudate, and the bronchial secretion obtained by bronchoscopy is an excellent test material. Various methods, instruments and skill have to be resorted to for the extraction of foreign bodies from the ear, esophagus, superior and inferior air passages. The authors recently experienced a case of a foreign body (hollow glass ball, 8×6.5 mm) aspirated into the right bronchus. The patient was a girl aged 2, and extraction had been tried by several specialists under inferior bronchoscopy without success. The foreign body was tightly wedged in the lumen of the right bronchus 8 cm below the superior margin of the sternum, the wall of which was oedematously swollen. She was brought to the authors' clinic after 7 days had passed. Having tried all methods unsuccessfully, the authors thought of the suction method by chance and succeeded in extracting the foi-eign body.
The method consists in approaching and sucking the foreign body with a rubber tube (5.5 mm in diameter) fitted to the tip of the suction tube inserted through the Bruninings' fenestrated inner tube. The authors have also proved that this method is applicable with far more ease to cases of foreign bodies such as beans, trisects and similar bodies in the external auditory canal. Kubo (Fukuoka)

The author examined 54 retired workers for the purpose of determining the compensation for the occupation deafness at the Mitsubishi Dockyard in Nagasaki City.
The degree of disturbance of hearing was greater with these retired workers than with younger workers who were in the same working conditions, and the auditory sense of them was deteriorated especially in lower tones. These phenomena are attributable to their advanced ages (56-57years), and presbyacusis probably contributed to the occupation deafness.
The compensation for the hearing disfurbance in the workers accident compensation insurance, therefore, should be limited to the hearing loss of over 50 db.

There are so many weak points in the usual subjective audiometry of the present day, that an early appearance of the objective audiometry is seriously desired.
As the fundamental experiments on this problem, the author has investigated the human salivary conditioned reflex by Pavlov's method, applying the pure tones of the audiometer as conditional stimuli, tartaric acid solution for non-conditional one, and white noise as control. In the experiments by 6 students (male) with 10 cases of normal and 2 cases of impaired hearing, the author has confirmed the possibility of measurement of the auditory threshold with an audiometer after training and maintaining such conditional response for a long time.(author's abstract)

Nasal fractures are apt to be neglected in most cases because of more major and vital injuries which usually accompany them. Deformities of the external nose and septum may not only disturb the nasal physiology, but lead to psychological disturbances due to the poor cosmetic appearance. For this reason, it is advisable for the doctor and the patient to correct the fractures as quickly as possible after the trauma.
The author has got satisfactory results with his new closed reduction method in seven cases of nasal fractures in the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic of Kyushu University Hospital. Method of operation: As the instruments a wooden hammer and a pair of septal forceps are prepared, and the latter is wrapped with gauze to protect the nasal mucous membrane from injuries during the operation. First the handle of the hammer is placed horizontally on the part of the upper lip and next the forceps are inserted in the nose and the operation is performed applying the principle of the lever.
In all the cases, whether under local anesthesia or under general anesthesia, cocain, percarnin and hyaluronidase should be used in the nose especially hyaluronidase is effective because it dissipates almost completely the edema caused by the trauma and anesthetic solutions.(Author's abstract).

A man aged 48, visited the author's outpatient clinic in July 1948 with a complaint of painful swelling in the left submaxillary regions. At that time by only manually compressing against the mandibular area, a colossal sialolith, 7.2grains in weight, was easily removed from the Wharton's duct almost naturally, and soon the symptoms were cured.
In May 1950, the same patient visited the authors again with the same complaint. This time an incision on the left sublingual area was given and again a colossal sialolith, 5.2 grams in weight, was removed. With regard to this case, the existence of chronic inflammation of the salivary gland as an etiological moment is discussed.

A woman, aged 21, noticed a tumor-like swelling in the left canine fossa when she was 8 years of age. The tumor, which was enlarging gradually, has rapidly grown recently, and she has come to feel slight pain. Considering it as haemangioma from its appearance, the author extirpated it incising the mucous membrane around it. Pathohistologically it was haemangiorna cavernosum with irregular blood-vessel multiplication.

Glatte Heilung.

Two cases of laryngectomy on patients of laryngeal cancer, complicated with the pulmonary tuberculosis with positive sputum are reported.
PAS, Streptomycin and INAH were administered before and after the laryngectomy in order to prevent the wound infection and aggravation of the tuberculosis of the lung. In this way the tubercle bacilli in sputum decreased from Gaffky No.2-4 before the operation, to 0 after the operation, and satisfactory results were obtained from the point of view of both the laryngeal cancer and the pulmonary tuberculosis.
In treating laryngeal cancer of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, two complications are feared: wound infection and spreading of the pulmonary tuberculosis. But the authors' experiences show that laryngectomy can performed without any danger and camplication and healing of laryngeal cancer can be effected.

First case: A girl, aged 1 year and 5 months, aspirated an old rusty needle into her right bronchus. In a try at its bronchoscopic extraction, it was broken into two pieces, one of which was luckily coughed out through the tube, but the other shorter piece was swallowed into her esophagus. And on the 4th day it came out through her anus.
Second case: A woman, aged 59, wrongly swallowed her artificial, teeth into her esophagus. She consulted two specialists immediately, but as she was told by them that there was no foreign body in her esophagus both esophagoscopically and roentgenologically, she did not call on a specalist any more, until she was admitted into the author's clinic 1 year and 6 months later. The foreign body was esophagoscopically found in her esophagus at a distance of 21 cm from the upper incisors and was extracted by the author.

Ilotycin was used in 8 cases of diphtheria and satisfactory results were obtained.
    1) The bacilli and pseudomembrane disappeared very fast and the general conditions of the patients were improved speedily. None of the patients complained of by-effects.
    2) In one case where Ilotycin treatment only was given, the patient suffered from recurrence paralysis, but he was cured quickly by the use of antitoxic serum in great quantities at an early stage.
    3) In view of the acting mechanism of Ilotycin, and serum should be used together for diphtheria, and also it is desirable to use them together for postdiphtheric paralysis.
    4) In view of the disappearance of the bacilli and pseudomembrane, the time of discontinuation of the use of Ilotycin should be at least two or tin ee days after the disappearance of the bacilli and, if possible, it should be used until the pseudomembrane disappears.
