The authors examined 394 cases of acute otitis media to study causative bacteria, their sensibility to antibiotics and the courses of treatment.
Following results were obtained:
The bacteria oftenest found on the culture of acute otitis media were staphylococcus aureus et albus, pneumococcus and influenza bacillus. Hemolytic streptococcus that had been regarded as the usual invader was only 4.2%.
Concerning the sensibility of the bacteria to antibiotic agents, staphylococcus was most resistant, while pneumococcus and hemolytic streptococcus showed high sensibility to penicillin. Chloromycetin and erythromycin were effective against all kinds of bacteria.
As to the courses of treatment, acute otitis media caused by hemolytic streptococcus was found to be cured in the shortest period, while that caused by other bacteria needed a longer period of treatment.
