Two cases with Meniere's disease and one case with Meniere's like vertigo attack were treated by instillation of 28 mg to 56 mg of gentamycin sulfate into the middle ear. The results obtained in the three patients were as follows: vertigo attacks were well controlled, labyrinthine functions were severely damaged, and losses of hearing were less then 15 dB.

Aspirin, kanamycin and acoustical stimulation were examined as a possible causes of reversible or transient tinnitus in a retrospective study of case reports. Early observations of cochlear injury assessed morphologically or electrophysiologically were considered in an effort to reconcile the clinical features and experimental observations concerning the origin of cochlear tinnitus. The mechanism of tinnitus is not known, but a clarification of the aspects involved are considered here.

The cervical lymphnodes of 94 cases of the head and neck squamous cell carcinoma with radical neck dissection were histopathologically examined. The prognosis of the group without any metastatic nodes had no significant differences from that of the group with 1 or 2 metastatic nodes. In the group with less than 2 metastatic nodes, the prognosis was so good and the 5-year survival rate was 74.7%. But, in the group with more than 3 metastatic nodes, the prognosis was very poor and the 5-year survival rate was only 24.4%, because the distant metastasis increased in number to three times of the other. Therefore, the postoperative systemic anticancer therapy is considered to be necessary on the occasion of the case with more than 3 metastatic nodes.

Anti-mite IgG antibodies in both serum and nasal secretion were determined in patients with house dust nasal allergy by means of radioallergosorbent test. Polystylen tubes, coated with extracts of Dermatophagoides farinae were used as the solid phase, and 125I-labelled protein A from staphylococcus aureus was used instead of the second antibody. In serum and nasal secretion, mean value of anti-mite IgG antibodies of nasal allergy patients group sensitive to house dust was higher than that of patients group sensitive to other antigens or normal control group. A significant rise of specific IgG antibodies in serum was observed as a result of immunotherapy, but was not observed in nasal secretion. No relationship was obtained between clinical symptoms and the level of IgG antibodies in serum or nasal secretion. These results could not support “blocking antibody” theory.

The recovery process in a case of the acute sensorineural hearing loss which was induced by exposure to the rock and roll music was reported. In this case, the complete recovery of hearing impairment was observed in 3 days after the exposure to the rock and roll music and it has been taken notice that the most remarkable hearing recovery was rather shown within only 24 hours after the exposure when any active treatment of the drugs had not been carried out. It has been suggested that the sensorineural hearing loss of showing the complete recovery in the early time after the exposure to the loud sound might be the delayed recovery of NITTS itself.

Therapeutic effects of methyl B
12 for subjective tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss were investigated on 576 cases in the Tokyo district. Out of them, 560 cases (773 ears) were patients suffering from subjective tinnitus and 430 cases (637 ears) were patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Methyl B
12 was administrated to each patients 1500μg per a day. On the fourth and 8th week after treatment, the patients were asked whether or not their tinnitus varried and were tested by pure tone audiometry. The patients with acute onset on tinnitus (226 cases) showed the most effective result. Thirty one per cent of them had been aware of disappearance or diminishing of their annoying tinnitus. In acute sensorineural hearing loss (128 cases), 26% of the patients had an improvement in their audiogram. On the other hand, in non-acute cases of tinnitus (285 cases) and hearing loss (228 cases), Methyl B
12 seemed to be ineffective. Of all patients considered, Methyl B
12 were effective in 28% of all tinnitus patinets and in 13% of patients of sensorineural hearring impairment.

Clinical effect of Cisplatin were evaluated in 55 patients with head and neck malignancies at 7 University clinics in Kanagawa prefecture. As a whole, the responsive rate was 55.5% for head and neck tumor. But the complete response could not be observed in any case. No difference of the effectiveness were not detected among the different primary regions, such as the larynx, hypopharynx and maxillary sinus. Also there was no significant difference by the differenciate grade of the squamous cell carcinoma, which is the most popular histological finding in head and neck carcinoma. Otherwhile, it was considered that the effectiveness of Cisplatin had a characteristic of the dose dependent. Furthermore, the response rate of the Cisplatin administration with other drugs was higher than those of the single use. Especially, the multidisciplinaly treatment combining the neo-ajuvant or induction chemotherapy is useful for head and neck carcinoma.

The effect of a smaller dosage of Histaglobin nebulizer (1/10 vial) was examined in 13 patients suffering from perenial allergic rhinitis patients. The patients were treated twice a week for four weeks with a nebulizer of Histaglobin. Within one week of the treatment, the patients showed improvement which continued in 12 of the 13 patients for four weeks of treatment. The effect lasted for about a week or more after the treatment was stopped. Histaglobin nebulizer is as effective at a dose of 1/10 as at other doses of 1/4 or 1/2 vial.

Clinical studies of NA872 were made on 24 cases with the inflammatory diseases of the upper airway in both Kagoshima and Mie University Hospitals. The result obtained as follows: 1) 17 of 18 cases with complaint of sputum were assessed as good responses and its efficacy rate was seen in 94.4%. 2) 9 of 12 cases with hoarseness were improved. 3) Neither side effect nor abnormal laboratory findings were noted in all cases. NA872 was thought effective and safe drug on the inflammatory diseases of the upper airway.

Efficacy of defibrinogenation therapy using Batroxobin on idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss was examined. The results are as follows; 1) The patients whose treatment was started within 10 days of its onset showed complete recovery in 41.1%, improvement in 41.2% and no change in 17.6%. 2) Complete recovery and improvement were also obtained in the group of subacute (11-21 days after the onset) and in that of chronic (more than 22 days) cases. 3) Blood fibrinogen measured during the treatment showed decrease of about 50% of the control level. Simultaneously measured blood viscosity also decreased about 10% of the control level. 4) Treatment was discontinued in 2 out of 52 patients, due to the side effects such as the augmentation of dizziness and the increment of hearing loss. It is concluded that defibrinogenation therapy can be a useful tool for the treatment of idiopathic sudden hearing loss.

It was already known that some kinds of ototopical solutions induced sensorineural deafness, if they were used to middle ear infection for long duration. By the above reason, it is the important examination to clarify the influence of new developing otic solution of FOM on the cochlear organ, before clinical use. 32 aminals of Hartley strained guinea pigs were used in this study. All animals received the measurement of Auditory brainstem response (ABR) on stimulation of 20,000Hz and 4,000Hz, using Teledyne Avionics 1000, before they received operation of perforation of ear drums. Left ears were used for evaluation of 1%, 3%, 5% FOM and solvent solution. Right ears were used for the influence of 0.5% chloramphenicol, 2% kanamycin, spontaneous infection and non-treated observation. Ototopical solution dropped in middle ear cavity, continuously for 6 days. After finishing the administration of drugs, animals received ABR, recording and then were sacrificed for pathological examination. As the result, there was no significant difference of ABR recording. The microscopic observation was focused the damage of Corti's organ, especially degeneration of the hair cells. No remarkable changes of Corti's organ were present in 32 left ears in FOM group, in 5 right ears in CP group and in 5 right ears in KM group. FOM otic solution is suggested that it can not affect to the cochlear organ under the above experimental condition.
