The following are the resume of the clinical, laryngoscopic and esophagoscopic observation of the 50 cases examined and treated with radiation during the past 17 years at Kyushu University.
    1) The incidence was highest with people in their fifties.
    2) Cancer of the entrance of the esophagus was met with more commonly in women, andcancer of the cervical esophagus, in men.
    3) Initial symptoms were mostly pain in swallowing with cancer of the entrance of theesophagus, and dysphagia with cancer of the cervical esophagus.
    4) Edema of the corniculate tubercule, paralysis of recurrent nerves, laryngeal fixation and growth of tumor were found in laryngoscopic examinations. Saliva retention in the laryngopharynx is an important symptom of cancer of the cervical esophagus and of laryngopharynx.
    5) Swelling of the thyroid gland was found in 8 cases.
    6) Lymph node metastasis was found in 17 cases (34%).
    7) Gastrostomy was carried out in 15 Patients, and tracheotomy in 11 Patients.

The author reported here ten cases of the Candida detected from eczema of the external auditory meatus while he was engaging in the search for Candida from the secretion of the tympanum in 161 ears of chronic perforated otitis media.
Clinical findings showed that myringitis was combined in all cases, and in 5 of t hem there was otorrhea with a singular apperance scattering white corpuscles over the surface.
Among the separated Candida, C. albicans numbered six strains and predominated. In the immunoserological reaction of patients of Candida, the complement fixation reaction was negative and the agglutination reaction was positive below 160 times.
In bacilli detected, the 5 strains of Gram's negative stain were separated, and showed tolerance to CM used in the treatment.
The author pursued the relation of Candida with other bacilli using stored strains of proteus, pseudomonas and staphylococcus in his experiments, and found that proteus and pseudomonas having a tolerance to 10γ/cc CM had symbiosis with the Candida.
His cological study of the Candida separated, immunoserological findings of the patients from whom the Candida was separated and the experimental study combined to conclude that in eczema of the external auditory meatus from which the Candia was separated, primary infectious agents were Gram's negative bacilli, and the Candida was mixed bacilli, confirming the theory of Conley.

The authors reported here 2 cases of disturbance of pigmentation with hearing loss. Dermatologically one was diagnosed as xeroderma pigmentosum and the other as leucopathia congenita. They observed total deafness in the former, and severe loss of hearing in the right ear and delay in the recovery after the load of loud tones in the latter. Each case was examined enzymologically and the relation between metabolism of pigmemt and mechanism of hearing was investigated from process of the formation of melanin.

A boy, 9 years old, suffered from daily aggravating left otorrhea since last June. After visiting a specialist who diagnosed it as left chronic suppurative otitis media with polyp and receiving various treatments in vain, he came to our clinic for a radical operation.
Tympanoplasty carried out on August 27 showed the existence of an enormous foreign body extending upwards from front to back over the deep part of the external auditory meatus and the tympanum. The foreign body extracted by forcep turned out to be an old bamboo scrap 3.0cm long and 0.8cm wide. Conversation with his family revealed that the boy had by accident in March last stuck upwards a bamboo stick into his left neck and the bamboo scrap 5cm long was immediately extracted by a surgeon.
We concluded from various circumstances that this remaining bamoo scrap gradually reached that region by mastication.

Case I is a three month old female, whose chief complaint was fistula formation on the outside of the lower margin of the right eye-socket.
She was not cured by treatment using antibiotics, but was completely cured by surgical treatment. After the operation (Luc-Caldwell's method) in which sequestrum and granulation were removed, sequestrum formation occurred again. And this time it was removed together with the normal part around it.
Case II is a male, 34 days old, whose chief complaint was the swelling in the right cheek. He died of complication of aspiration pneumonia despite the radical operation and chemotherapy.

The patient, 16 years old male, complained of nasal obstruction. He had suffered from left nasal obstruction for 3 years. He had been performed a radical operation of sinusitis one year before. But he did not recover from nasal obstruction after the operation and suffered from mucous secretions. There was no tendency of nasal bleeding. there was a tumor in the rear of the left nasal chamber and in the left nasopharnyx, mucous secretions in the nasal/chamber.
The color of the tumor was rosy like mucous membrane, the surface was flat, and the consistency was cartilaginous.
The tumor was exposed by the palate method and exfoliated under the periosteum. It was so trong that the authors failed to remove it with the heated snare, and only succeeded with the electric knife.
The tumor filled the left nasopharynx, seemed to grow from the under plate of the sphenoid bone and invaded the sphenoid sinus.
It was histologically hard fibroma with hyaline degeneration and regressive tendency. But fatty degeneration, calcification, and ossification were not observable.

In Eitern waren Streptokokken nachweisbar.
Mehr als einen Monat nach der Behandlung erholte sich die Aussenverschiebung des Augapfels auffallend (5mm) und mit weitgehender Besserung anderer Augenerscheinungen wurde der Patient entlassen.

The authors reported 3 cases of marked saddle nose, postfatal adhesion of the soft palate to the posterior pharyngeal wall and congenital deformity of the lip treated by plastic surgery with satisfactory results.
In the first case, rhinoplasty was tried using rib cartilage and ivory in view of remarkable ugliness.
In the second case, the operation was carried on through the oral cavity unaccompanied by postoperative atresia or stenosis.
In the third case, cosmetic attention was paid to incision and suture. Attention was also paid to contraction by wound healing and to symmetrization.

The patient was a clerk, 45 years old male, came to our hospital complaining a swelling in the left cheek, and was hospitalized suspected of the mixed tumors of the left parotid gland on Feb. 19, 1959.
The tumor was as large as a child's fist, its hardness was the same as bone, and it had no fluctuation, no change in hardness according to location and no metastasis to circumferential tissues.
In an X ray examination, the image of deficient shadow was seen in the left maxilla. The excision of the tumor was performed under a local anesthesia, and its findings were as follows the parotid gland was in fibriform hypertrophy and was not tumorous. On its median side, a tumor as large as a child's fist was found growing on the posterior superior part of the left maxilla.
It was covered with the periosteum, assumed a dark-red colour, and a slight fluctuation was observable. No metastasis to circumferential tissues was observable, its boundary was clear but it spread to a wide range in the inferior jaw. The tumor was excised as large as possible, and the rest of it was curetted.
The excised lump was weighted about 40 gr and measured 6.0×4.0×3.0cm.
Histologically, it was the giant cell tumour and the findings showed a typical pattern which consisted of the spindle shaped cells and the giant cells. Both cells presented no malignant pattern.
The giant cell was 50-100μ in diameter and had 10-30 nuclei.

We reported 2 cases of keratosis of the larynx, each 51 years old male, having investigated thepatients of the disease admitted to our clinic during the past 53 years and the literature of Japan.
The former was 3 cases (0.6% of the patients of benign tumors of the larynx), and the latter was 9 cases included our own.
Viewed from the clinical findings and histological pictures, keratosis of the larynx is considered to differ from leukoplakia or pachydermia, and ought to be distinguished from each other.
In treatment one must keep in mind that it presents precancerous appearance as one of our cases shows.

The authors reported here 26 cases of laryngeal cancer treated in their hospital for the last 10 years.
Most of the patients underwent interstitial radium irradiation and the rest, radiation by Co60.
Their experiences showed that irradiation is effective in the treatment of this cancer if the size and location of the tumor and the mobility of the cords are duly considered. Radiation by Co60 seemed to be the treatment of choice.
