JOURNAL FREE ACCESSApplying pretwisting to the wire of a helical spring those obtained under a remarkably strong spring can be made as compared with prestressing or setting method.In this paper the principle of this process and several fundamental phenomena observed in these springs are mentioned. Also the meaning of the bluing treatment of springs is discussed. When loading-the coil diameter of a spring made of cold drawn wire expands, while it contracts after it was annealed. By annealing not only the coil diameter, but also the length of a spring changes. These phenomena were explained as the effect of the anisotropic properties of the wire and the fading of residual stresses involved during coiling and twisting of the wire.View full abstractDownload PDF (783K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSTo make clear the pretwisting effect on the strength of a helical spring, its static and fatigue properties were examined on several kinds of helical springs made of wire twisted ordinarily and inversely during or before the coiling.The results obtained are as follows: (1) The effect of pretwisting on the strength of a helical spring depends on the mode of twisting A remarkable improvement can be obtained by ordinary twisting during the coiling and a slight improvent by twisting before the coiling. (2) By inverse twisting the fatigue strength of a spring decreases remarkably as compared with the elastic limit because of tensile stresses acting on the crack plane produced by pretwisting of the wire. (3) By prestressing or so-called setting process a fair increase in the elestic limit of a spring can be obtained, but the fatigue limit is not much increased.View full abstractDownload PDF (761K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSTo raise the capacity of W contacts, it is important to unify the size of grains by doping. The author has this more quantitatively according to under various conditions of contacts and found the following facts. In the case of heavy loads, high purity and a coarse interlocking structure is required but in the case of light loads, the purity may be lower and the grain size finer. Still more strictly speaking, the grade of grain size and purity must be decided appropriately according to the magnitude of the electr ical and mechanical loads. Of course in this case uniform grain size is required. In the case of heavy loads, W contacts made from tungstic oxide containing a large quantity of Al2O3 such as 0.4% irrespective of the existence of the second or third less volatile additive oxides may be used with advantage, while in the case of light loads those which contain 0.4 per cent of SiO2, 0.2 per cent of Na2O and 0.2 per cent of K2O are suitable.View full abstractDownload PDF (845K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe magnetic properties of Ba-, Sr- and Pb- ferrites with and without Bi2O3 were observed. Fe2O3 prepared from Fe(CO)5, BaCO3, SrCO3, PbO and Bi2O3 were fired at 900° for 2 hours, and then sintered at 1000∼1200° for 15 minutes. The results obtained were as follows: (1) 4πIs and 4πIr of Ba-ferrtes with 1.5%Bi2O3 were larger than those of Ba-ferrites without Bi2O3 by 20∼30% under the above sintering conditions. (2) IHC of Ba-ferrites containing Bi2O3 was larger than that of single Ba-ferrites by 15∼40% at the composition of Fe2O3/BaO<6.0. (3) Such effects of Bi2O3 could scarcely be recognized in Sr- and Pb-ferrites. (4) The above effects of Bi2O3 might be due to the acceleration of the sintering velocity.View full abstractDownload PDF (665K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSome phenomena about the hot-rolled plate were investigated by microhardness tests and microscopic examinations. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The reduction of hot-rolling of about 77% had to be given in order to change the cast structure to the wrought structure, in which recrystallized grains were found. In a lighter reduction, both the working and the thermal influences ununiformly affect the inner parts of hot-rolled stock. (2) A comparatively homogeneous structure was obtained by a severer reduction than that, but when the total reduction is too large, the stock becomes again heterogeneous with the fall of temperature. (3) Larger partial reduction of hot-rolling gives superior properties to cold-rolled sheets and it was found that the size of the grains in the surface layer may become coarser or finer than that in the inner layers according to the hot-rolling conditions.View full abstractDownload PDF (1296K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSYoung’s modulus and its temperature dependence in silver-copper and silver-lead alloys have been measured by lateral vibration method of a cantilever under a small amount of stress. In these alloys, Young’s modulus change almost lineally with composition, as in carbon steels. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe changes of the rigidity modulus, the electrical resistance and the hardness following precipitation were studied with Cu-Be alloy samples containing 1.97% of Be, which, when properly heat-treated, shows the highest strength (say, 150 kg/mm2) and good elastic properties as copper-base alloys. The measurements were made by use of a torsion pendulum, a potentiometer and a micro-Vicker’s hardness tester. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The rigidity modulus increases and the electrical resistance decreases with hardening due to precipitation. (2) The heat-treatment required for obtaining the maximum rigidity modulus is not equal to that required for increasing the hardness to the maximum, but is equal to that required to reduce the electrical resistance to the minimum. The maximum hardness was obtained by aging at 300° for 2 hrs, the maximum rigidity modulus at 350∼400° for 2 hrs and the maximum conductivity at 400° for 2 hrs. (3) The rigidity modulus of the specimen that was cold-drawn to the reduction of 50% after quenching (solution heat-treatment) is larger than that of a merely quenched specimen, but there is no perceptible difference in the forms of the isochronal curves of the two. This is an evidence supporting the conclusion that the increase of the rigidity modulus is not due to recrystallization but to precipitation hardening.View full abstractDownload PDF (542K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe influence of an addition of chromium on the thermal expansion coefficient of the alloys of iron, cobalt and nickel has been determined. It has been found that in the quaternary system of iron, cobalt, nickel and chromium, there are two valleys of the expansion coefficient, one of which originates in the compositions of invar or super-invar and another in the composition of stainless invar. These valleys come together at the section of 10 per cent of chromium; showing that stainless invar is closely connected with invar or super-invar and that the nickel and the cobalt contained in those alloys can be substituted almost lineary for each other.View full abstractDownload PDF (413K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe influence of an addition of chromium on the rigidity modulus and its temperature coefficient of the alloys of iron, cobalt and nickel has been determined. It has been found that, at the section of 10 per cent of chromium,there are two maximum portions of the positive value of the temperature coefficient of rigidity modulus, one of which originates in the composition of elinvar and the other from the composition of co-elinvar. These maximum portions coincide at the composition of about 14 per cent of nickel, about 35 per cent of cobalt, 10 per cent of chromium and rest of iron; showing that co-elinvar is closely connected with elinvar and the nickel and the cobalt contained in those alloys can be substituted almost linearly for each other.View full abstractDownload PDF (545K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe influence of an addition of nickel on the thermal expansion, the rigidity modulus and its temperature coefficient of the alloys of cobalt, iron and vanadium has been determined with the alloys containing 9.1 per cent of nickel The relations between those properties of nickel added alloys and the concentrations are qualitatively almost similar to those in the case of the ternary alloys of cobalt, iron and vanadium. The addition of nickel affects the coefficient of thermal expansion and the temperature coefficient of the rigidity modulus of the ternary alloys as if cobalt can be substituted by nickel; that is the compositions, at which the thermal expansion coefficient shows the minimum value and the temperature coefficient of the modulus the positive maximum, shift to the side of low cobalt content with the addition of nickel. And, when nickel is added, the concentration range having the positive temperature coefficient of the rigidity modulus becomes wider and the slope of the latter to the concentration smaller.View full abstractDownload PDF (466K) -

The relations between those properties of nickel-added alloys and the concentrations are qualitatively almost similar to those in the case of the ternary alloys of cobalt, iron and vanadium. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe effect of the loading speed (stress rate), which is varied from 3000 to 10 g/mm2/min on the tensile stress-strain curve and the deformation characteristics was studied up to 3 kg/mm2 stress with commercial purity polycrystalline aluminium. An increase in loading speed was found to have a marked effect in inhibiting the initial deformation and in modifying the subsequent stages of deformation. The yield stress, the homogeneity of the plastic deformation all over the specimen, the heterogeneity of the deformation along the direction of slip line and the rate of strain hardening were increased, the space of slip bands and the number of fine structure in each slip bands were decreased with an increase of the loading speed. The results were discussed in the terms of number of the active the dislocation sources N(σ,\dotσ), assumed to be N(σ,\dotσ)=N0(σ)(1+A\dotσm) from the stress concentration facter. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe dimensional changes due to annealing of eutectoid steel bars consisting of lamellar pearlite occur in the opposite direction due to cold-working before annealing. But in the case of eutectoid steel bars consisting of granular pearlite, the dimensional changes occur generally in the same direction as the deformation due to cold-working before annealing. Thus the form of pearlite has an important effect on the dimensional changes due to annealing of cold-worked eutectoid steel bars. The tendencies of hardening due to cold-working and the elastic after-effect in the case of the lamellar pearlite are larger than those in the case of granular pearite, and the direction of the dimensional change due to annealing after cold-working in the case of the former is the same as the direction of the elastic after-effect at room temperature.View full abstractDownload PDF (710K) -

The dimensional changes due to annealing of the former are also larger than those of the latter.
