This paper aims to establish the relationship between the air permeability of multi-layered fabrics and that of each constituent fabric. A new equation has been derived applicable to layered fabrics of both same and different kind. The parameters A and B governing the permeability of layered fabrics can be derived from those of each fabric. The experiments have shown that the new equation has a high accuracy if sufficient spaces exist among layered fabrics.
An application of the equation to the layered clothing in practical wear has shown that:
    (1) Under an air flow at high-speed by the Frazier tester, air permeability is determined by the fabric of least air permeability.
    (2) In the tightly layered fabrics, the experimental parameter B relating to the capillarity is greater than that of the theoretical value. This might be considered that the spaces among layeredfabrics play capillary effect.
