It is important to elucidate the features of physical construction for design fitting of garments. Business suits are fixed form, so, we investigated the consciousness of the wearers toward them and the actual conditions of the fit. The investigation was carried out from December, 1994 to June, 1995 on 607 Japanese adult males ranging from 20 to 59 in age. We discussed the problems of garments covering the upper half body. The main results were as follows:
    1) More than 90 percent of the subjects answered that business suits were necessary for business wear. Readymade suits were worn by 81 percent of the males. Thirty point seven percent of the subjects answered that there were no appropriate ready-made suits for their own body form.
    2) When buying ready-made suits, more than half of the subjects check for easy movement and fit at the shoulder. But the rate of check on stability of collar or conditions at the side and back is less than 20 percent.
    3) Ill-fitting parts on ready-made suits in a standing posture at rest were observed at the bottom line, crease in the neck piece, seat, front cut, front waist and sleeve length at the rate of from 40 to 65 percent. The above ill-fitting parts, except for the crease in the neck piece and sleeve length were related to each other. These ill-fit conditions were related to the side view of the physical construction.
