  • —On the Cue Dominance in Impression Formation—

    This study was designed to examine the cue dominance in impression formation based on clothing features. Sixty male undergraduates, who were presented full-length pictures of female undergraduates, rated personality traits of the stimulus persons based on their clothing features. How each component of clothing features influences perception of three personality traits (personal familiarity, activity, and social desirability) extracted by factor analysis was examined by“The Method of Quantification I”.
    The following results were obtained. The cues dominant in all three personality traits were“type of upper clothes”and“color of upper clothes”. Some other cues were dominant in each personality trait. Besides above two cues, “pattern of upper clothes”was dominant in“personal familiarity”, “type of lower clothes”was dominant in“activity”, and some clothing features of lower half of body were dominant in“social desirability”

    In order to clarify the relationship between wear feeling and frictional properties of slips, 21 spring/autum slips were examined against female japanese students.
    The results obtained were as follows:
    1) Comfortable slips have special feelings such assuberi ga yoi (slippery), matsuwari tsukanai (no clinging), suso ga agaranai (no rising of the hem) andkiteiru kanji ga shinai (no feeling of wearing a slip) . They are nylon slips and polyester ones. On the other hand, uncomfortable slips do not have the above-mentioned feelings, and they are slips, the skirt part of which is made of 100% cotton and cotton mixtures.
    2) Friction measurements between slips and a panty hose (100% nylon) or a lining (100% cupra) have shown that the friction of cotton cloth is about 5 times more than for nylon and polyester. Therefore, when using cotton for slips, the cloth must be made more slippery.
    3) The MIU (mean coefficient of friction) is closely related to the above points and they are effective parameters for estimating the feeling of wearing a slip.

    The brightness on CRT display affected by fabric movement or cover factor has been studied and the following results have been obtained.
    (1) The mean brightness (cd m-2) of moving picture of fabrics on CRT display due to afterglow is theoretically shown as (R1v+Q1) {u (v) -u (v-v1) } + (R2v+Q2) {u (v-v1) -u (v-v2) } + (R1v+Q3) {u (v-v2) -u (v-v3) } +B1u (v-v3), where v is the moving velocity (m s-1), u (v) is a unit step function of v, B1is the highest brightness (cd m-2), R1, Q1, R2, Q2, Q3and v1<v2<v3are constants (cd m-3s, cd m-2, cd m-3s, cd m-2, cd m-2, m s-1, respectively) .
    (2) The mean brightness of stationary picture of solid color fabrics on CRT display is theoretically expressed as DCf+E, due to unevenness of fabric surface, where Cfis the cover factor of fabrics, D and E are constants (cd m-2, respectively) .
    (3) The above mentioned results are in good agreement with the experimental results obtained by using a video camera, a CRT display and a illumination intensity meter.
