The purpose of this study is to clarify the behavior on the preference and purchase of garments of female students. For this study, students were asked for their purchase plan and the reason why they would like to buy sixteen items of ladies' outerwear garments by using a prepared questionnaire. As a result, the buying tendency concerning the rank of items preferred among sixteen types of garments and the ratio of students who answered “yes” were almost similar between first-year students and second-year students. However, principal component analysis on the reason of purchasing has shown that main reasons to buy articles were precisely different between first-year and second-year students. This means that the need to fullness on their possessed wardrobe and the negative/objective motivation are dominant on the buying behavior of the first-year students. On the contrary, the need to metamorphosis and the positive/subjective motivation are dominant in the second-year students. These differences of needs are important for the marketing and merchandising of garment, even if the difference of age is only only one year.
