Fluorescent whitening agents (FWA) absorb UV-A and decrease the transmittance, resulting in the increase of the UV-A protection efficiency. In this research, the UV protection efficiency of FWA absorbed during washing was clarified. Twenty two cotton and polyester fabrics were washed with four types of powder detergents for ten times by Tergot-O-Meter, and UPF (UV-B protection index) and APE (UV-A protection index) were calculated. Concerning the cotton fabrics, FWA decreased the transmittance of UV-A and UV absorber decreased that of UV-B. All the cotton fabrics having no UV protection effciency before washing showed enough efficiency after five times washing except shirting (Kanakin in Japanese). Kanakin was the only one cotton fabric which did not show enough efficiency after ten times washing. These results were also confirmed by an automatic washing machine. For the protection of photoallergy, it is advisable to wash cotton fabrics with detergent containing FWA and UV absorber before wearing.

For the purpose of new development of silk to clothes for men and women, the effect of the twisting on the raw silk yarn was investigated on the dyeing and the light reflection using Ariake cocoon. The twisting numbers tested were 0, 500,1,000,1,500 and 2,000T/m.
    1. A little effect on the dyeing with acid dyes was examined on the yarn and the fabrics of different numbers of twisting.
    2. The intensity of reflected light (luster) of silk yarn and fabrics decreased with increasing of number of twisting. Therefore, the twist multiplication on raw silk yarn is a suitable method for the purpose of control of luster according to the usage such as the men clothes.
    3. A little influence of the twist multiplication on the surface color was examined as a change in the chromaticity in L*a*b* color space.
