On Laundering Factors Affecting the Shrinkage of Wool Knitted Fabrics

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors affecting the shrinkage of wool knitted fabrics undergone a commercial laundering. The experiments have been carried out by using a commercial laundery washer under conditions based on an actual operation.
The main results obtained are summarized as follows:
1) Factors affecting the shrinkage are:
a) kind of wool, i.e., with/without shrink-proofing treatment, b) rotating speed of a washer, c) volume of water (bath ratio), d) drying temperature, and e) drying time.
2) Recommended laundering conditions are:
a) lower rotating speed of a washer, b) higher bath ratio, c) higher drying temperature, and d) shorter drying time in a tumbler.

In order to ascertain what properties of fibers affect the pilling tendency, a special tester has been developed which can produce pills directly from fibers not from cloths as hitherto.
The experimental results have revealed that among the mechanical properties of fibers a torsional rigidity is as important as a bending rigidity in the pilling tendency.

Effects of finishing of fibers have experimentally been investigated on the pilling tendency. Viscose rayon fibers have been treated with resin finishes to increase a torsional rigidity without changing the bending rigidity. The pilling tendency of finished fibers has been determined by the testing instrument developed in the part 4. The fact that the resin finishing decreases the pilling tendency has proved that the torsional rigidity greatly affect the pilling resistance.
