A questionnaire survey of high school students regarding self-consciousness and their opinions and behaviors towards cosmetics has shown that the more the students feel self-acceptance, the more they expect that makeup will cause exhilarated conditions or feelings such as a “change in appearance” or “impression management”. It has also shown that the less the positive aspects of self-consciousness such as “fulfillment sentiment” for boys or “self-actualization” and “having a good relationship with parents” for girls become, the more they feel as if they cannot do anything without makeup. The factor analysis of their attitudes towards cosmetics has shown that a “change in appearance” or “impression management” and “necessity for makeup” belong to the same factor for boys while to different factors for girls. Further, by using multiple regression analysis, opinions towards cosmetics have been estimated from their self-consciousness and behaviors, and the obtained relationships have been compared for boys and girls: high school boys are more affected by self-consciousness than by behaviors towards cosmetics while high school girls are less affected.
