The purpose of this study is to investigate sensory evaluation of Japanese and Brazilian young women wearing brassieres produced both in Japan and Brazil in order to obtain an approach for an adaptable design for multiethnic users. 20 Japanese and 22 Brazilian young women who have Japanese size in C70 or Brazilian size in 42/small participated as subjects, and 3 types of Japanese and 3 types of Brazilian brassieres were tested as samples in sensory evaluation test. Clothing pressure exerted by these brassieres was measured on 14 Japanese subjects. Brazilian brassieres showed lower clothing pressure than Japanese ones. Japanese subjects evaluated Brazilian brassieres as low-compressive sensation and low-shaping silhouette sensation, also high correlation between clothing pressure and compressive sensation (r=-0.81), as well as compressive sensation and shaping silhouette sensation (r=-0.83) were observed. Differently, Brazilian subjects evaluated Brazilian brassieres as providing higher wear comfort sensation than Japanese ones, also overall wear comfort sensation was highly correlated with texture sensation (r=0.97) and with clothing pressure (r=-0.90). These results suggest that brassieres with elastic performance, flexibility, low clothing pressure and comfortable texture are requested in Brazil.
